The Western Civilization Timeline

500 BC

Birth of Philosophy and Democracy

Around this time in ancient Greece, the study of Philosophy began to spark up in search for unanswered questions. In addition, Democracy also began as Greece was on the rise of becoming powerful and needed a form of organized government.

This 50 year old war took place over political dispute. With millions dying the Greek finally won which allowed the spread of democracy, art, literature, and science.

Greco-Persian Wars

With the Greek and Persians at war it left a lot of catastrophes but without the greeks winning the new world wouldnt have known about a lot f the new sciences and literature.

499 BC

Socrates, Plato, & Aristotle

400 BC

These three geniuses were the first ones to make people really take philosophy into serious consideration. They began to study and question knowledge, science, reasoning, and anything that made people really think or feel uncomfortable.

Macedonian Empire

With Alexander the Great as their leader, the empire stretched from Europe all the way to India. They quickly became a threat as they grew very rapidly within nearly a decade.

300 BC

Rise of Rome

With the Rise of Rome a new form of government was founded. This all happened because people shifted from a monarchy to a republic form of government. This benefited them because it gave the people a voice.

200 BC

Rise of the Roman Empire

As Rome and their new for of government was on the rise, they began to expand which lead to them reaching Europe and parts of northern Africa.

50 BC

Pax Romana

Pax Romana translates to "Roman Peace" because that is exactly what it is. It was a time period which lasted about 200 years with no war over the Roman Empire.

27 BC

Life of Jesus

With the birth of Jesus a new religion came to follow. Christianity spread throughout Europe and later on had a huge impact on the western world. Now it is the most popular religion in the world.

This mass fire all started in a merchants shop. Nearly burning 1/3 on Rome to the floor nearly 90% of homes or buildings in the city.

65 AD

Constantinople the Great

With The Great Constantinople being a huge leader, when he converts to Christianity people begin to convert as well and causes a huge spread of Christians.

300 AD

Fall of Constantinople

As word spread that Christianity was on the rise, the people that practiced islam were not happy and attacked the great wall forcing people to convert to islam or move west.

330 AD

The Last European Empire leaves

With the leaders of the empire leaving and no one in charge, the church officials are left and they must take matter into their own hands. This forces them to become the new leaders and government officials.

476 AD

Life of Mohammad

Born in Mecca, Mohammad saw visions and began to write them in a book. The book is now the Quran and when he left Mecca he gained a big following then came back to conquer the land. Then in 650, The rise of islam began to sky rocket and became very popular.

570 AD

Franz Schubert

This composer was famous for bringing two types of music cultures together. His displays this in his lieder.

776 AD

Charles the Great

As he was the king of the Franks, he also founded the Holy Roman Empire. This gave huge economic and political power to Europe as they were now more advanced than anyone.

J.S. Bach

His music is very popular and we can sometimes hear it in movies but his most famous piece is the unaccompanied cello music.

The Crusades

This was a mission for the holy churches to take back the Holy Land from the people of Islam. This benefited the churches because people would donate lots of money and this kept the churches financially stable.

1100 AD

Ganghis Khan's Mongol Empire

This empire was a terror to others. They took over so much land and would destroy anything in their way. On the other hand they were respectful towards others cultures and they adopted some as they went along. They also spread items such as paper, gunpowder, and the compass.

1162 AD

The Great Schism

This caused a lot of havoc in the Roman Catholic Churches. With three popes that claimed to be in charge people didnt know who to listen to so this caused a division of the churchs.

1250 AD

Renaissance

This era was extremely important in shaping the future. As it spread knowledge, art, and culture it people became more intelligent. With this starting in Italy it spread all the way to Europe and eventually to the New World. This also led to the printing press in 1450 which allowed books and bibles to be mass printed and practiced.

1300 AD

The Black Death

This horrific plague cause over 75 million deaths. This cause people to grow angry with the catholic churches because they believed it was all Gods fault. Others just blamed Jewish people.

1347 AD

European colonialism

With Europe expanding finding new land, this led to new colonies in Africa, Asia, India, and even the new world. This allowed them to trade more often with different textiles which meant there would be more wealth in Europe.

1500 AD

Protestant Reformation

In this time people begin to question the Pope and the Catholic Churches authenticity. This caused the a split in the churches and created denominations.

1517 AD

The Enlightenment

This was the time when was practiced a lot more. This cause society to change and sparked up the American Revolution (1775-83) and the French Revolution (1789)

1650 AD

Industrial Revolution

Factories helped mass produce items and gave millions of people jobs. This also popularized trains and cars but this forced children at a young age and caused a lot of worries.

Mary Wollstonecraft

Mary was considered the mother of Frankenstein because her daughter wrote one of the most famous books in the world but on the other hand she stood up for feminism and this helped womens rights movement.

Beethoven

Everyone knows how Beethoven's 5th symphony sounds like so he has already made a huge impact in his time and in the life we currently live.

Johannes Brahms

Even though people dont really appreciate Brahms music that much, he truly is a mater of his craft. He composes his music in a way where every section has their own spot light in the show that they must master to bring the piece together.

Frédéric Chopin

Chopin was claimed to be an poet when it came to writing piano solos. His music can be hear as you paddle a canoe down the rivers in Paris or at a high class restaurant. His music is still played til this day.

Medical Revolution

This discovered that dieses were caused by microorganisms. This allowed a mass production of pills, medicines, and vaccines.

Charles Darwin

His proven therories of revolution has truly impacted the world in an amazing way. He has made science studies easier and more accurate.

Civil War

This Civil War in America proved that their form of government works. It also made slavery illegal and the slave trade collapsed.

Georges Bizet

Bizet is most famous for his opera "Carmen". While he composed the music and the stage play the Opera drama is very popular.

Death of Archduke Ferdinand the Second

This death was caused by people who who didnt like what they were politically doing so on a journey him and his wife were assassinated and this sparked up World War ll

Great Depression

When the economy collapsed investors lost millions of dollars, banks went out of business, 15 million americans went unemployed, and the globe itself saw a decrease in employment.

1929

World War ll

Hitler and the Nazi's started with the invasion of Poland and then went on with others. With millions of jews killed and Europe becoming a wasteland, Soviet Union and United States rose to the event.

The Cold War

The soviet Union tried to spread communism but they fall short when they get to Europe and Russia.

Sputnik

The Soviet Union landed the first satellite in space. This sparked up the space race, helped produce new weapons, make artificial limbs, and put a man on the moon

JFK assassination

He had great vision for the country but couldnt carry out his plan because he was shot during a parade. Yet his replacement finished most of his plan and followed through to the civil rights act and the funding for NASA.

1963

Digital Revolution

Advanced technology came out and this is a huge change for the economy. This also allows new jobs and businesses but it allows hackers to steal millions of dollars easier.
