By: Cesaleigh Snider

"Super Size Me" Film Analysis:

  • Directed by Morgan Spurlock

  • Released in 2004.

  • Focuses on Obesity & Fast Food Examination

TITLE

CLAIM

Main Focus/Claim:

  • The causes and effects of obesity.

  • The fast food absorption levels rising due to a larger number of fast food chains.

  • The level of privilege in America than other nations.

  • The dangers of fast food on your health.

  • Fast food is life threatening in excess amounts and the effects are varied and extreme. (per the experiment by Morgan Spurlock at McDonalds)

Strategy

#1:

Strategy #1: Narration and Sounds

Spurlock uses a very soft toned, sometimes sarcastic man to narrate the film. This soft toned voice helps to provide importance to certain events and helps to provoke the audience at times.

By using a background music track, it helps to progress the film and create suspense.

(drum beat....whistle....drum beat....whistle)

Other sounds, such as whistling, fast drum beats, and song excerpts, provide emphasis to certain fast food brands.

Strategy

#2:

Strategy #2: Camera Angles

Zooming in, panaramic views, and fast fowarded videos help to show the large amounts of people who eat fast food.

It also helps to intrigue the reader in a level of shock, and it enhances the use of rhetorical questioning.

Strategy

#3:

Strategy #3: Statistics/Charts/Maps

Throughout the film, Spurlock uses statistics, charts, and maps, to build logos, show the spread of fast food, and to show the blunt evidence of the risks and dangers of fast food.

  • "Nearly 100 million Americans are either overweight or obese."
  • "Since 1980 the total number of overweight and obese Americans has doubled."
  • The first hand experience in the McDonald's experiment by Spurlock

Strategy #4: Emotional Elements

Spurlock uses:

  • Different obesity photos
  • Personal anecdotes of the narrator
  • The struggles of weight of teenage girls
  • The convenience of fast food joints for everyone and how easy it is to disregard personal limits since fast food is everywhere.

Purpose:

The main purpose of "Super SIze Me" is to educate the audience about nutrition, by showing the dangers of fast food on your body.

While it also highlights other points such as the spread of fast food, privileged America, etc.

PURPOSE

Audience & Tone:

While this film focuses on obesity, it targets everyone. The audience is merely those affected by fast food, whether already obese or skinny.

The tone of the film was very serious in the beginning, with some sarcastic remarks, but it transitioned to being more funny and entertaining when the experiment progresses. All throughout the film, though, an educational mood is portrayed.

Rating & Explanation:

I would rate this documentary a 10/10 or a 5 star review. It was very interesting, while also being very informational, which is not always common. It appealed to many of my emotions. The experiment may have been a little extreme in some scenes, but overall it was a very good documentary that I would recommend.
