The Peace and Friendship Treaties were a series of Treaties between the Indigenous and the British from 1726 - 1779. There were four tribes who signed the Peace and Friendship Treaties, the Mi'kmaw, Abenaki-Penobscot, Wolastoquiyik and Passamaqupdy tribes. They are commonly referred to as the Wabanaki tribes. The Wabanaki signed a peace treaty in 1726, to end the 1722 war, and then each tribe signed different treaties.
The Mi'kmaq, along with the Passamaquoddy and Wolastoqiyik peoples live in present day New Brunswick. The British mantained good relations with the Mi'kmaq through the Peace treaty of 1752, signed by Jean Baptiste Cope, the Chaif Sachem at the time, promising hunting, fishing, and trading rights.

Before the Europeans came to Canada, there were almost 16,000 Abenaki peoples. After some contact with the European, their population reduced by 98%, by diseases and other deaths. The Abenaki signed the Peace and Friendship treaties with the British in 1726.

The Peace and Friendship Treaties guaranteed the Indigenous peoples to hunt, fish, and proceed with cultural habits if they were allies with the British. The Peace and Friendship Treaties also ensured that there were no violent acts against the British Crown, and in return the British promised to not harm the Indigenous.
