Part 2:

Caption

Example

Each day for 10 days

  • Take a picture of something good or an opportunity

  • Write a caption of the photo and give advice

For your photo of something good, caption it with a description.

What was this moment like? Where and when did it happen? Who was involved? How did it make you feel? The more detail, the better.

"This is a my mom. She is my support system. She is wearing her favorite shirt and standing in front of a mural on our street. My aunt (her sister) gave her the earrings for her birthday."

"This is a picture of the ice cream I got today, It was hot outside and the ice cream cooled me down to my toes. It was rocky road with whipped cream. Yum!"

For your photo of something good, provide some advice for other teenagers with an illness.

Advice

Example

"You do not have to face everything alone. Family, friends, doctors, and nurses can be great when you are feeling sick or needing someone to listen. Don't try to do it solo! It takes teamwork to beat some illnesses!"

"After taking yucky medicine, I suggest you get the taste out of your mouth with something yummy. Also, ice cream can be a great distraction if you are feeling some pain."

Part 3:

Each day for 10 days

  • Take a picture of something challenging or difficult

  • Write a caption for the photo and give advice

For your photo of something challenging or hard, please caption it by describing it.

What was this moment like? Where and when did it happen? Who was involved? How did it make you feel? The more detail, the better.

Caption Example

If you took a picture of your stitches, you might write, "I had to have stitches, which hurt. Now, they itch!"

If you took a picture of your meds, you might write, "This photo shows that I have to to take a lot of pills to feel better. Yuck!"

For your photo of something challenging or hard, after you write a caption, next provide some advice to help other teenagers with an illness.

Advice Example

"Taking your medicine regularly can really help you feel better faster!"

"Stitches are no fun, but they can leave a cool scar. Also, they can remind you that it takes time to heal."

Part 4:

After 10 days, write a letter:

Hi!

I’ve realized that there are a lot of ups and downs that come with having a health condition. And even though it can be exhausting and annoying, I have started to notice some good moments, whether they are tiny or big. I started to notice how much my mom and siblings care for me by asking how I feel and giving me things that help with my pain. Over time, I have found that it’s helpful to continue to go the movies or do fun things with friends even when I don’t feel great. I feel better after I do these things. For me, one the most helpful things is remembering that even though some days are difficult, not all days will be. It’s sort of like the Hero’s Journey. Even on hard days when it felt like the road of trials would never end, I realized that things are always changing and it’s just one phase in the journey.

Good luck!
