What is Special Education for Adults?

Introduction

  • The term “special education” includes educational programs and services that assist individuals with mental, physical, emotional, and behavioral disabilities.
  • Adults require diffrent accomodations than a child who also has a learning disability

A learning disability is a neurological disorder that impedes an individual’s ability to store, process, or produce information. Learning disabilities may also involve difficulties with organizational skills, social awareness, social collaboration and understanding others’ viewpoints. People with learning disabilities have normal intellectual functioning, but they may have difficulty in reading, writing, spelling, reasoning, recalling, and/or organizing information if left to their own devices or if taught with conventional learning techniques.

  • Before the extensive research we have today, students who needed additional assistance in the classroom were thought to be lazy, slow learners, or mentally disabled
  • Many students felt discouraqed and dropped out of school or did not pursure post-secondary eduation
  • Students were misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all
