The Civil War

By: Dino Cantelmi

What caused the War

  • The North and the South had been arguing about whether or not slavery should be banned or not in the United States
  • They also had been arguing about the idea of states rights
  • Tensions had been rising over these arguments and it eventually led to eleven southern states seceding from the Union
  • Southerners felt that the abolition of slavery would destroy their economy, and the Northerners thought that slavery should be banned everywhere for humane reasons

What Started The Civil War

When Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860, the South was worried that Lincoln was going to ruin there way of life, which was there institution of slavery so they seceded from the Union, and later the Civil War began.

The American Civil War was a war fought between the United States of America and the Confederate States of America. It was a war between the different opinions of the North and the South due to sectionalism.

What was the Civil War

  • The Battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1 to July 3, in 1863
  • General George G. Meade was the general who was fighting for the Union and General Robert E. Lee was the general fighting for the Confederacy

General Lee who had just scored a victory at Chancellorsville kept advancing to the North. Lee had hoped to gain recognition from Britain and France by winning this second invasion of the North.

The Battle of Gettysburg

PART 1

The Battle of Gettysburg was the largest and bloodiest battle of the Civil War. There were more than 50,000 casualties, and even though it was a horrific and terrifying battle, it was a major turning point in the Civil War.

The battle was a turning point in the war because the number of casualties the South had was far more costly to them than the North because the South had a smaller population.

Because the Confederate's made an attack known as Pickett Charge they suffered too many casualties and were forced to retreat. General Meade is criticized strongly for not pursuing Lee as he retreated.

The outcome of the battle ended with Robert E. Lee retreating and the North claiming victory

The life of a soldier

In General George Meade early life he entered the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1831. He resigned from the army is 1836 and became a civil engineer working for railroads and the U.S. War Department. He later got married in 1840 and had seven kids. He reenlisted in the army two years later as a junior officer in the Mexican-American war. At the start of the Civil War in 1861 he was a brigadier general of Pennsylvania volunteers because of a recommendation from the state's governor. He got seriously hurt at the battle of Glendale, but luckily recovered. He got promoted to Major general of volunteers and was later placed commanding the army of Potomac under Joseph Hooker. He was then surprisingly placed in charge of the Union army of Potomac after Hooker resigned. Then came the battle of Gettysburg where at first his army suffered heavy casualties, but then because of the attack known as Pickett's Charge the Confederacy suffered too many casualties and were forced to retreat. He won the most bloodiest battle of the Civil War.

It was a crushing defeat for the Confederacy, the Union casualties in the battle were rounded up to 23,000, and the Confederate's number of casualties was about 28,000. After the battle Ulysses S. Grant attacked the town of Vicksburg and forced Lee to surrender on July 4. Because of the battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg the Union was able to win the Civil War.

The Aftermath

Differences between the North and the pro-slavery South had erupted into an all out conflict after the election of 1860 when Abraham Lincoln became president. 11 southern states seceded from the Union to protect their way of life, and economy which was all based around slavery. General Lee won a victory at Chancellorsville, and advanced to Pennsylvania where he lost and retreated. While that happened Ulysses S. Grant took over Vicksburg which gave the Union control over the Mississippi. There were a few more attacks after that until Robert E. Lee finally surrendered at Appomattox Court House. The Union won the war.
