How she met her demise

Marie Antoinette

Louis XVI was executed on orders from the National Convention in January 1793, and in August the queen was put in solitary confinement in the Conciergerie. Marie Antoinette was guillotined on October 16th 1793 after the Revolutionary Tribunal found her guilty of crimes against the state. She was tried for reason and executed on October 1793 at the age of 37. She was imprisoned for the three main charges: conspiring with foreign powers, the depletion of the state treasury, and of commiting high treason by acting against the security of the French state.

Marie Antoinette's background

Marie Antoinette's execution, the Place de la Concorde

Marie Antoinette was born in Vienna on November 2nd 1755, one of 16 children. Her parents were Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I. Marie's education was typical of that given to a royal woman of the time, and she learned how to sing, dance and play music. She was married to Lous XVI in a planned marriage on April 19 1770. She had four biological children with her husband King Louis XVI, before facing her execution in 1793. They were: Marie Thérèse Charlotte, born on December 9, 1778, Louis Joseph Xavier François, born in 1781, Louis XVII, born in March 1785, and Sophie Hélène Béatrix, born in July 1786. Marie-Antoinette was queen of France from 1774 to 1793 and is associated with the decline of the French monarchy.

Her role in the revolution

  • Marie Antoinette is one of the most iconic characters in Versailles' rich history. She arrived in the french court at only 15.

Marie Antoinette

Several events were linked to Marie Antoinette during the Revolution after the government had placed the royal family under house arrest in the Tuileries Palace in October 1789. The June 1791 attempted flight to Varennes and her role in the War of the First Coalition had disastrous effects on French popular opinion. Also, because of Louis XVII's indecisiveness, Marie Antoinette played an increasingly prominent political role. Her rejection of reform and resistance to the French Revolution contributed to the monarchy's overthrow in 1792.

fun fact about Marie Antoinette

How she got her nickname

The famous "Let them eat cake" was said by Marie Antoinette. The story is that someone came up to Marie and told her that all the peasants were starving because they had no bread. She said "Well, then, let them eat cake instead!" because she was so posh and rich and pompous that the concept of starvation didn't even register to her.

During the revolution Marie Antoinette became known as Madame Deficit. This was because the country's financial crisis was blamed on her lavish spending and her opposition to the social and financial reforms of Turgat and Necker.
