Marlow arrives at the mouth of the Congo River.
Marlow considers the journey to be a little frightening, and he despises not being able to do much. "The idleness of a passenger, my isolation amongst all these men with whom I had no point of contact, the oily and languid sea, the uniform sombreness of the coast, seemed to keep me away from the truth of things, within the toils of a mournful and scornful delusion"
The station is not at its best peak. As he arrives he was welcomed with decaying machines and black prisoners.
Marlow meets the chief accountant and calls him amazing
To get to the Central Station, Marlow and the caravan move 200 miles over desert. Marlow observes that he is being "scientifically fascinating" as he travels.
Marlow is annoyed at the fact
that his ship sunk and he has to fix it. "It presented itself as a confunded nuisance"
After a long journey, Marlow arrives at the inner station. He meets a Russian merchant and informs him that all is well after the attack. The Russian dealer requests that Marlow transport Kurtz because he is gravely ill.
Kurtz passes away so Marlow decides to go back to Europe after escaping.
