Learning Bites

  • French revolution started after the storming at Bastille in 1789

  • After the Bastille attack, Peasants formed their National Assembly for the rights of common men

  • Toughest period of France during revolution was reign of terror, which resulted massive killing, conflict and led by Robespierre

  • In Paris, Napoleon found that many people were dissatisfied with the Directory. he used his popularity and proclaimed himself “First Consul” 1799, than emperor, than Napoleonic code, his success and achievements

Napoleon was exiled to the island of St. Helena in the Atlantic, where he died in 1821.

In March 1815, he again proclaimed himself emperor. Unhappy soldiers united to his side. A joint British and Prussian army led by the Duke of Wellington defeated the French at Waterloo.

  • Spread the idea of enlightenment
  • Challenged the idea of divine right and noble privilege in Europe
  • Remove Feudal system
  • Rose Democracy and Social Equality
  • EQUALITY, LIBERTY, and BROTHERHOOD became foundation of French government
  • Idea of free men and equal rights since than spread through out the world
  • France as Model of future revolution
  • However, British considered French revolution as a dangerous act
