PEI primarily successed in their wood, wind, and water economy. As well as crops from farming and fish from fishing. There was also a strong, ocean-born trade between PEI and the united states. Most of the PEI population was rural and engaged in farming, fishing, and lumbering.
PEI had good agricultural resources. Only one third of the land in PEI was owned by farmers. In the 1800s most of the agricultural resources went to Britain, the US, West Indies, and Latin America. During the buildings of the railways, products produced from PEI were in high demand. Britain and the US signed a treaty in the 1850s to allow free trade. PEIs most important trade partners were Great Britain and the US because they purchased most of PEIs products.

George Coles was the outstanding PEI parlementarian of his era, dominating the assembly with his quick mind. He also bought an exceptional passion to the politics of his era. His most important legacy was free education. And his commitment to it should be understood in relation to the land question. John Hamilton Gray supported confederation as premier of PEI and host of the Charlottetown Conference in 1864.
