1100 AD

Rockets have been around for like forever. they were first invented in China. The first rockets were really simple as they were just a tube filled with gunpowder. At that time they were used for fireworks and weapons. They used fire arrows to defeat mongol invaders.

Fun fact

Fun fact

The Chinese also made the gunpowder used in the rockets we are talking about. it is said that a man wanted to find a medicine that will make you immortal but little did he know that he just made one of the most deadly inventions ever. It is so deadly because gunpowder is used for many weapons and that cause a lot of deaths.

1898

A Russian school teacher Konstantin Tsiokovsky suggets that we use rockets to explore space, he also suggest to use liquid propellants because it would gain greater range.

1898

the wright brothers

the wright brothers made the first plane in 1902 in kitty hawk. They made the first successful flight in history with a self propelled aircraft

1903

16 March 1926

American Robert H Goddard files the first successful liquid-propellant rocket. A rocket powered by liquid oxygen and gasoline. he goes on building bigger and higher rockets

1926

V-2

in 1942 during world war 2 German engineers led by Wernher Von Braun made a ballistic missile named the V-2. It was made so that the Germans can bomb allies forces without using planes and losing them in the process. The V-2 was the first rocket that is capable of reaching space.

1945-1946

In the first and hopefully last use of nuclear weapons stopped the second world war from raging on in the pacific. America bombed two Japanese cities causing Japan to surrender. After the surrender of Japan ending the second world war. America and the Allies forces took German scientist and rocket engineers to help their own militarizes. With the help of the German Rocket engineers they started using V-2 rockets to test the atmosphere.

1950s

Intercontinental ballistic missiles were starting get developed. There was many different range missiles that were made. Some of these rockets launched astronauts into space.

1950s

This is the atlas ballistic missile and it was the first operational intercontinental ballistic missile developed by the United States

the Sputnik 1 the first artificial satellite to be launched

The Space Race 1955 – 1975

the space race

The space race is where the two superpower nations at the time were fighting for dominance showing that their technology is better then the others. They didn't only just fight for dominance for space, they both pushed their military to the limits showing that they were the stronger one and that if there is another war they would be ready. That basically sums up the space race and the cold war. 2 years after the race started, the Soviet Union launches the first Earth-orbiting artificial satellite called the Sputnik 1 it was the first major milestone.

a year after the Soviet Union sent it's first satellite, America finally puts out it's first satellite called explorer 1. After 9 months of the launch of America's first satellite NASA was founded. NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Major events

major events for the Americans

February 1959 First weather satellite launched

The Vanguard 2 satellite is the first weather satellite to be launch. The satellite is used by scientist to forecast the weather.

February 1962 First American to orbit Earth

John Glenn becomes the first American to orbit the Earth. His capsule was so packed with equipment that there was only enough sitting room.

1969 Apollo 11 moon landing

The massive rocket ship named the Saturn v took the first people to the moon. Apollo 11 was the first flight that landed people on the moon. Neil Armstrong became the first person to set foot on the moon and Ed Cernan was the last man to set foot on the moon in 1972

Russian events during the space race

January 1959 Luna 1

Successful launch of Luna 1 by the Russians, the rocket flew passed the moon. The rocket accidentally escaped the orbit of the Moon due to the object having too much speed. Luna 1 became the first man made object to escape Earth's orbit and orbit the sun instead.

12 September 1959 Luna 2

The USSR launches Luna 2 and it accomplishes its mission by becoming the first space craft to reach the surface of the moon.

April 1961 Yuri Gagarin becomes the first person to orbit the earth

Yuri Gagarin was a the first person to orbit the earth in his capsule Vostok 1. It was a major milestone in the space race.

1980-2011

1980

2011

A new era in space flight began on April 12, 1981, when space shuttle Columbia became the first space shuttle to be launched into orbit. They are designed to be reusable. They have been used to place many satellites and they used it to build the iss (international space station). The final flight was by space shuttle Atlantis on July 8, 2011.

Rockets

rockets are anything that uses the thrust and power from a rocket engine which is the thing on the bottom of the object which shoots out fire. the fire is caused because of the technique of getting thrust for the engine. rockets can be anywhere from missiles to aircraft.

what is a rocket?

FUTURE

As more countries and private companies such as SpaceX make more plans to reach the moon, mars and even beyond the future is looking good for rockets. Soon in the future we might colonize mars and maybe even have Space ships that takes us to places. Who knows? The possibilities are like endless but this is basically the timeline for now.
