The

TL:DR

Engineering as the tool to getting the life you want

Discipline & Enthusiasm > Innate Intelligence

Lead a transformative life: Fail fast, fail often. Be your own startup.

Engineering Management

People focused role that can still be highly technical

Lead initiatives and foster growth within the organization

Work with a team and build effective workflows that teams can rely on

Key Points

Supplying the Fight Against Cancer

Bonus Growth Unlocked!

An Engineering degree does not preclude you from doing non-engineering endeavors, and might instead help significantly towards the realization of it.

Very few things in life are so final as to be unreachable.

You don't have to choose between an engineering career and your dreams.

"In 2023, 1,9M new cancer cases and 609k cancer deaths are projected to occur in the United States."

- American Cancer Society

Example

Alternative

Gallium-68 (Ga-68)

Germanium-68 (Ge-68)

It's like Alchemy

(But it works!)

Using particle accelerators, it is possible to create critically needed ingredients for life-saving medicine at scales 100x greater than before

Used in: PET scan (positron emission tomography) to find tumors (NETs) in adults and children.

Nusano's facility can produce Ge-68 at scale from Zinc (Zn-66), a common material. Ge-68 slowly decays into Ga-68 over time.

~10k treatments annually in Europe across 100 facilities

Solving the logistics problem in cancer therapy

Medical facilities no longer need to build a cylcotron to provide PET scan treatments, as Ge-68 can be stored for up to 1 year

Obstacle: Requires a local cyclotron facility because Ga-68 has a very short half life (~1 hour)

Effective cancer treatments exist that require exotic radioisotopes, but no reliable source exists

New Skill Acquired

You're not defined by your education. Your education is defined by you.

The "Imagineering Way"

Perfect environment to learn the inner workings of many departments

Get a new understanding of the complications other groups face

Got to travel the world and build something that mattered!

The art of turning the impossible into the possible

My childhood dream:

Become a Toy Maker

Key Concepts

WDI's Motto:

"Happier People make the world a better place"

Everyone is Creative

Use "Yes, and..." instead of "No"

Career Aspirations:

The Big Realization

Creativity is a skill and can be mastered!

Key Points

Growth Unlocked!

The biggest "Turn-off" for managers is a fresh grad who thinks they know it all.

Find and Learn from people who have a distinctly different background; A different perspective might allow you to apply yourself in new ways.

Be Curious. Seek out new perspectives.

Embrace discomfort and uncertainty.

IEEE OPS

Time to Graduate!

My First Startup

The "Plan"

  • A chance to do something that matters for others.
  • Proved the demand for such a program existed at UCLA

Practicing Passions

1. Move to Norcal

2. Get job at $BigTechCompany

3. $$$

Reality

1. Recommendation from friend to WDI

2. Accept Internship for 6 months

3. Offered job; Stay 4 years

4. Move to the other side of the world

Personal Projects

Practicing Passions

  • Don't know how? No Problem!
  • Started more projects then I could finish

Key Points

Growth Unlocked!

Handle the design of all the parks and resorts (Cruise lines, hotels, travel…etc)

Creative Design and Engineering

140 Disciplines under one roof

Life rarely work out exactly the way you want to.

Take action. Do not wait for the perfect idea to come by.

Don't miss an opportunity to do something that matters.

Be Adaptable. Take Imperfect Action
