Heart of Darkness Timeline

By Haven, Meadow, and Eric

England

Marlow gets a job with the company after a capitan was killed in a dispute with natives.

"I was going into the yellow. Dead in the

centre. And the river was there—fascinating—deadly" (pg.14)

Marlow sees two women at the door of the office knitting black wool. This is an unsettleing sight.

Before he leaves, the doctor measures his cranium.

"'In the interests of

science, to measure the crania of those going out there,’ he

said. ‘And when they come back, too?’ I asked. ‘Oh, I never

see them,'" (pg.16)

Outer Station

Marlow sees african natives chained together

"It was the same kind of ominous voice; but these men

could by no stretch of imagination be called enemies." (pg.23)

Marlow sees a group of dying men under a tree.

"Black shapes crouched, lay, sat between the trees leaning

against the trunks, clinging to the earth, half coming out,

half effaced within the dim light, in all the attitudes of pain,

abandonment, and despair. " (pg.25)

Marlow meets the "snow white" accountant. He tells him how Kurtz exports more ivory than everyone else combined. He knows that he will go far

Inner Station

Unfortunately, Marlow finds out that his boat has sunk

Marlow overhears the manager and his uncle talking about how they hope Kurtz contracts a tropical disease

The expedition leaves and disappears in the jungle and then sends a letter saying that all their donkeys are dead.

After fixing his ship, he departs to the inner station accompanied by cannibals

The Hut

Marlow finds a mysterious hut with a pile of wood.

There was a note that said, "Wood for you. Hurry up.

Approach cautiously." (pg.60)

He found an odd book about seamanship. It seemed to be written in cipher.

ATTACK!

A fog rolls across the river and savage screams fill the air

"It culminated in a hurried outbreak of almost intolerably excessive shrieking, which stopped short,

leaving us stiffened in a variety of silly attitudes, and obstinately listening to the nearly as appalling and excessive

silence" (pg.64)

The steamboat is bombarded with arrows. The other white men begin to shoot at the natives.

The helmsmen is killed trying to shoot at the natives. The only thing on Marlow's mind was the blood on his shoes.

Marlow realizes that Kurtz must be dead if the natives here are hostile

"‘He is dead,’ murmured the fellow, immensely impressed. ‘No doubt about it'" (pg.77)

Marlow has slight sympathy for the helmsman. He decides that he doesn't let the cannibals have him. Instead, he throws him to the fish.

Inner Station

Marlow meets a russian man with a "harliquin" coat. He turns out to be the man who build the hut.

Marlow sees eerie heads on sticks.

"And there it was, black,

dried, sunken, with closed eyelids—a head that seemed to

sleep at the top of that pole" (pg.96)

Kurtz is led out of the station on a stretcher and the natives come out of the woods crying for his departure

Kurtz’s mistress walks along the shore dressed in a massive head dress. Everyone stops to look at her.

Marlow tells that manger that he thinks Kurtz is a respectable man, which makes Marlow unsound

The Russian tells Marlow that Kurtz planned the attack on the steamer in order for him to stay in the station longer.

"He hated sometimes the idea of being taken away—and then

again…. But I don’t understand these matters. I am a simple man" (pg.105)

Marlow wakes up and hears chanting and sees the natives fire in the jungle, he looks in Kurtz’s cabin and sees he is missing, so he leaves the steamer to look for him.

Marlow chases Kurtz and they see a native sorcerer and Marlow convinces Kurtz to go back to the ship.

The natives watch the ship leave, but the mistress screams which causes an uproar! The pilgrims start to fire on the natives as the ship leaves.

The Journey Back

The ship breaks down and Marlow starts to fall ill, but Kurtz is getting worse by the day. So, he gives Marlow some papers to make sure his legacy is secured.

“The horror, the horror” Kurtz shouts as Marlow walks into his cabin one day. (pg.124) But not wanting to wach, Marlow flees to the cafeteria where he hears the news that Kurtz has died.

Kurtz is buried the next day and Marlow soon falls ill and almost dies. Once he recovers he goes back to Brussels, but hates everyone he sees because they don’t understand how lucky they are.

England

Marlow gives some of Kurtz’s papers to the company but keeps some for Kurtz’s cousin and Kurtz’s Intended

Marlow goes and visits Kurtz’s Intended and talks to her about Kurtz and his last days.

The Nellie

Marlow, now on the Nellie sits with his other crewmates, discussing his time as a fresh-water captain in the Congo.

The view from the Nellie reminds Marlow of his journey on the Congo and tells his fellow cremates about his story.

After talking all night, Marlow ends the story and the narrator looks off into the night sky. He says that it looks like they are going into the heart of darkness.
