Litigation Paralegal LSO # P-01450
Each one of these, on their own, is a BIG IDEA, but to use a cliche ... the total is greater than the sum of the parts.
The breadth and depth of the 'Paralegal 2020 Vision' only reveals itself in its true vibrancy and colour when all these BIG IDEAS are brought together in one place. A place that can
* facilitate the CONNECTIVITY between the stakeholders mentioned,
* enable us all to LEVERAGE the new technology of the Digital Age,
* make us more EFFICIENT and EFFECTIVE in whatever role we have and
* facilitate the development of a common culture with our own KOMMUNITY ...
What could we call a place that brings everything and everyone legal together in a central location? It would kinda a centre for legal things ... hmm ...?

If you think of it, this versatile, virtual structure could be a great thing for AFFILIATES (those that provide services to licensees) as well.
The VIRTUAL OFFICE could be customized to create a marketing platform, in the form of an AFFILIATES KIOSK, where products and services could be highlight or demonstrated in a working environment to a perpetual stream of potential, highly-committed clients. Affiliates could be of any type, including but not limited to E&O insurers, office suppliers, legal researchers, private investigators, practice management software providers, bookkeepers & accountants, marketing, ...
From a Licensees' perspective, having a centralized location where we could find and purchase any and all the services that we need to start and stay in the profession would be an incredible benefit. Think of having an 'Everything Legal' One-Stop Shopping Centre.
A virtual shopping mall just for paralegals? That is a BIG IDEA too!

Features & Benefits for Affiliates
This collaboration could greatly enhance the potential of our ASSOCIATIONS like OPA and OPSPC to co-ordinate our efforts as a profession and increasing the respect and the political pull that we can command.
Conceivably, associations of any type could utilize the VIRTUAL OFFICE to their benefit. Such a virtual platform could greatly facilitate communication and co-operation of their members, making it easier for all to participate to the advantage of everyone.
Larger organizations would reap the greatest benefit simply because their size multiplies the value gained. However, it might be that because of the simplicity of use, low cost and ability to bring distant people together with ease, it would be the smallest groups, like church groups or local community theatre ensembles as example, that would find the most value. Maybe that is an even BIGGER IDEA.

And since we are already 'going to the mall' ... there is another ready-made market available to Affiliates ... STUDENTS. They pay exorbitant amounts for their education and are highly motivated to succeed. They are sure to want some services that Affiliates could provide. This would be especially true for specialized services like tutors or textbook and school supply sales.

All Paralegals need a place to work ...
We could create a VIRTUAL OFFICE for PARALEGALS with
... tailored and scalable virtual office-spaces (a place to work),
... productivity software (the tools to do the work),
... substantive legal and business (the knowledge for the work),
... standardized system-wide protocols (so we can help each other with the work).
A virtual office available for all licensees is an BIG IDEA as well, but consider further ...
While the website could be a powerful way of connecting the public to paralegals, the Virtual Office could be a powerful system of collaboration and co-operation between paralegals. We could help each other with business and financial admin, management, marketing, systems tech and of course legal practice.
But it actually goes deeper than that.
But it actually goes beyond even that. With the astronomical cost of education today, it makes every sense for students, whatever they are studying, to make the most of their resources and leverage the tools available to succeed. A STUDENT'S DESK modified with software specifically designed for students could allow them to maximize the value of their study time. Capital outlay to obtain these tools would be minimized by the sheer weight of economies of scale that we, as a group, could command. Being able to connect with other students using the same platform would enhance interaction and co-operation among STUDENTS in the same way it could for paralegals.
PARALEGALS
The PUBLIC needs to be able to connect with Paralegals.
We could create a COMMUNITY LEGAL WEBSITE. By listing every paralegal, providing a basic profile page, enabling the ability to publish legal articles and making it easy for the public to connect with the paralegal, we could substantially facilitate ACCESS TO JUSTICE for the public and help ourselves at the same time.
A communal website to bring paralegals together in one place so the public can find us is a BIG IDEA in and of itself, but that's just the beginning.
If that isn't yet another BIG IDEA by itself then couple it with an INSTRUCTOR'S OFFICE incorporating teaching tools and material to assist in the ability to teach cogent and meaningful classes to the students. Increased effectiveness and efficiency in administration and learning module preparation, specific to the legal profession, is also possible. The connectivity aspect of this platform applies here also, since teaching material and methods could be more easily and widely shared between educational professionals.
STUDENTS
& TEACHERS
Academy
Seniors
So if we can create these virtual tools for STUDENTS and TEACHERS why not modify the VIRTUAL OFFICE to create a VIRTUAL CLASSROOM where they can actually have the classes. Indeed, why not create a VIRTUAL ACADEMY to supplement existing courses already offered around the province, offer specialized courses not offered elsewhere or host CPDs (Continuing Professional Development). This ACADEMY could give a jump-start to those entering the profession and aid professional development for those already practicing, reinforcing the perception of competence in the profession. Over time, with the accumulation of course material and instructional expertise, such an 'institution' would be a valuable resource.
An on-line legal academy is a very big, BIG IDEA and demonstrates the true potential of the VIRTUAL OFFICE, not only as an educational platform for our profession but as a tool of co-operation, collaboration and community. And yet, the whole concept of enabling us to help each other can go even further ...
In consideration of who might make the best instructors, and thinking about the full life-cycle of a paralegal, creating a seat for the SENIORS of our profession could be the biggest BIG IDEA of all. This platform could help us absorb their expansive knowledge for the benefit of all. Consider also the humanitarian aspect that this platform could provide. By enabling SENIORS to work from home or wherever they may be, the VIRTUAL OFFICE can further extend their active participation a meaningful way long into their lives. Income generation and contribution to the professional and/or good of society are major factors in quality of life ... that which makes life worth living.
Facilitating a more rewarding and longer life for our professional colleagues? ... NOW THAT IS A BIG IDEA.

Incentivization & Critical Mass 2
To be successful every site has to be able to pull a minimum number of users within a time frame that is dictated by the speed by which the investment capital is depleted.
1. The Virtual Office platform is ready for Alpha testing by the various stakeholders considered in this presentation ... licensees especially since it is the Licensee Office upon which all the other offices are based. Alpha tester are needed to work out any bugs and streamline the customizations.
2. Use of the website by the public and the licensees was the original goal of this project ... Drawing the public requires participation by licensees, both in the Find a Professional section and by contributing to the Legal Library.
3. Different groups have different ways to be 'incentivized'.
* Licensees may be able to brought on board by offering the service for a highly attractive discount - even as a lost leader for a period of time.
* Associations and Elders may be incentive the connectivity provided. It may be that these groups are never monetize because they may be what attracts others to use the platform.
* Students and teachers might be enticed to join to utilize the Academy resources and formalized structures to their advantage.
So there is something to incentivize each of these groups enough to 'get involved' during this initial setup phase and only through usage over time can this platform become a reality.
However, there is no replacement for capital input and it is expected that up-front investment is necessary to cover expenses of creation, development and maintenance of the platform for the period needed to reach the critical mass. The up-side is that there are numerous potential long-term revenue streams that would develop on reaching that critical mass. The public website could itself generate membership fees or third-party advertising.
The Student Desk is conceived of as a lost leader but enables fee generation for courses at the Academy. These courses can be offered by Elders or others and can generate income for the instructors. This thereby further increases the mass and brings others into the platform. The 'lost' part of the lost leader could be made back with the hope that when the student becomes a licensee, the natural inclination will be to simply upgrade their Student Desk to a Licensee Desk. With a stead flow of new students every year, a stream of new platform users are likely to guarantee increased growth over time. So, as revenue potential stands, the Legal Centre has many ways to generate income for itself and its participants
The Legal Centre is meant to be a 'win-win-win-win-win-win-win-win endevour.
* The public wins by increased access to legal information and licensees.
* Licensees win with increased profile with the public and by gaining access to a turn-key virtual office platform that makes them more effective and efficient and keeps them up-to-date with the latest technological advancements so they aren't left behind.
* Affiliates win by having on-going access to a vibrant community of highly motivated potential client base.
Associations win by having an easy and highly effective way of bringing their members together and coordinating their efforts.
* Teachers win by having a plethora of virtual instructional aids available at their disposal to be use as tools to learning.
* Students win by having those learning tools for themselves and having access and, through the Academy, to instructors, battle-hardened by experience in the profession.
* Elders in the profession win by having a way to continue to participate in the profession and by imparting their wisdom to the collective whole in a permanent medium benefits us all.
*Numerous others, from government departments and boards to social agencies to civil society groups, can win in ways which can't be predetermined or maybe even preconceived.
* We all win by creating a professional environment of co-operation and community ... a culture to which we can all contribute.

Use MOOCs to give extra credit
The first way teachers can use MOOCs to help their high school students learn and succeed is to allow students who are struggling to take a MOOC on the subject for extra credit. Some students who are struggling in the traditional classroom may engage better with online learning in the MOOC context. Of course, teachers will need to provide oversight and make sure students don’t abuse a program like this. An extra test that is designed by the teacher can make sure the students actually engaged with the MOOC and learned something along the way.
Use MOOCs to supplement course material
One of the great things about MOOCs are how accessible they are – MOOCs that are developed by quality platforms (like the three we recommend) can even be viewed from an app on a smartphone or tablet. This ease of access allows teachers to get creative in how they can use MOOCs in the classroom. For instance, teachers can assign MOOC lectures as homework, and then focus on activities and projects in the classroom.
This kind of hybrid approach takes advantage of the best of both worlds – students can take courses developed by world renowned universities like MIT, but they still have accountability and personal interaction with a teacher. If used appropriately and creatively, MOOCs can be a very valuable tool in a teacher’s toolbox.
Recommend MOOCs as optional preparation for college or exams
As we mentioned earlier, MOOCs are a great way for high school students to get familiar with career paths and what would be required to get a degree in a specific subject. Teachers can recommend specific MOOCs to students who are self-motivated and really want to prepare for college. MOOCs open up a world of possibility to students who are willing to put in the effort to take advantage of them.
There are also MOOCs that are specifically designed to prepare students for AP or CLEP exams. edX is one platform that has quite a few MOOCs designed for this purpose. An example of a MOOC that prepares students for a CLEP exam is "Preparing for CLEP Chemistry: Part 1." There's also edX's MOOC, "Preparing for the AP English Language and Composition Exam," which is focused on AP Prep.

THE IMPACTS AND BENEFITS OF ONLINE TUTORING SERVICES
One-on-one tutoring services is an ancient method of learning, passing the most mind capturing knowledge from teacher to student needs a more personal touch; and this method has proven to be more efficient than the traditional teaching methods of tutoring a number of students at the same time.
Studies have shown that students who receive personal tutoring have performed better than students who don't. If what you want is to improve academically or to be the best among your peers then a personal teacher will help you turn your dream into a reality.
The downside to this is finding the right teacher with the right qualifications to help you on that particular subject you need improving on, and who actually follows the right curriculum; finding such individual locally can be a challenge, and when you do find them it can be very expensive.
But with the emergence of new technologies, especially the internet; after-school learning is now on a whole new level. Online tutoring is the norm these days, although online teaching services have been around for a while, a lot of students haven't considered meeting with a virtual teacher; this is because they do not know the benefits of having one and the impact it will have on their education.

PARALEGAL 2020 VISION: INTRO
With the advent of the digital age, a new vision - in both thinking and doing is required for us to keep pace with the future.
It's all about CONNECTIVITY. To have real 'Access to Justice', it should be easy for the PUBLIC to connect to a PARALEGAL.
Once connected, paralegals need to be able to LEVERAGE the technology to be more EFFECTIVE and EFFICIENT.
As a profession, we should also be able to leverage each other's knowledge and experience. If we could do that, we could build a reputation of competence within the profession and with the public at large. Doing so would also facilitate the development of our own distinct professional culture in the process.
Despite separation by distance in the physical world, it is possible for us to come together in the virtual KOMMUNITY where we can all feel we belong .

The range of applications of this platform are apparent by simply cross-referencing any of the actors listed below could leverage any one or more of the factors identified above. By increasing connectivity beneficial results increase exponentially. This is true with any of these actors individually but the cumulative effects could be immeasurable.
* Feasibility Study:
Q. Is it technically achievable?
A.- Having an alpha model does not make the final result workable. The system has the advantage of being a customization of various already operating systems so there exists a high probability that the platform can be, at least technically achievable.
Q. What are the options and cost - time & capital?
A. Using separate servers as host or relying on third-party virtual servers, such as Microsoft, both have their own considerations. With full professional setup the cost either way is comparatively minimal and comprising mostly of tech time.
* Maintenance cost - $ user - including - Data usage
Q. Would there be so many tech maintenance and support calls in addition to data usage cost attribution to make this project untenable?
A. This is an issue that would have to be explored and the cost incorporated into the various packages that were offered.

Virtual Desk for Seniors
So the question is ...
Is this project of value enough that you could assist with ... and if so how can we work together to maximize whatever assistance you choose to offer?
Monetization and a 'Bundle of Rights'.
To understand the potential here it is helpful to outline a legal paradigm that understands property law as a 'bundle of rights'. In common law, rights in land are like a bundle of sticks. Each one represents a particular division of the whole and can be stripped off and leveraged (sold, leased, rented ...) in and of its own right. A land owner can sell mineral rights, water, land and/or air passage easements, or anything that another is willing to pay for. The list is non-exhaustive.
In the same way, the Legal Centre can offer similar rights for 'compensation' as incentivization to both those that have capital investment or skills to offer. An experienced instructor that already has a cpd or other instructional product or service for sale could be allowed to sell that offering, an affiliated could be offered featured marketing space, a licensee could sell secondary skills online to other licensees (drafting claims, making marketing videos, mentoring or even acting as second chair. ) The list of potential revenue streams derived from the various sticks in the bundle is virtually unlimited.
There are numerous positions that need to be filled by in order for the platform to be operational aside from the standard executives such as Pres, VP, Sec. Treasurer and BoD etc. Each Legal Centre operated site needs a Site Administrator to lead the development of that site so that it really meets the needs of members. This is a position that requires vision and administrative skill. Some positions such as Head Librarian and Academy Principal would require some special vocational knowledge and or experience.
Still, reliance on individual member contributions with some kind of tailored incentivization is a slow approach and risks failure from not getting the ball rolling in the first place. Third-party investment is needed to jump-start the project. While each section could operate independently, the true strength of the project only gels when the whole project is in place as a whole.
The lead time to Critical Mass is estimated to be two years to four years with financial backing. This accounts for creation, development and implementation as well as client pool accumulation to read the critical mass. The alpha model is already in place (more or less) so the technical structures and procedures could be in place in less than a year with enough support. And additional year of Beta testing would be sufficient to put the project on solid foundation.
The question is how to raise capital investment in the project so as to bring it to fruition. This summarizes the second issue that requires resolution.

this is a project ... the Phoenix Project I call it ... that was envisioned well before its time. The project died and is reborn as the name implies. The potential value that could result from this Phoenix rising from the ashes is beyond my imagination. It can not die. It will not die. If not now, it will rise again, because the concept and fundamentals upon which it rests are sound and the world evolves.
The fact that you have been shown this presentation means you are seen as someone that might have have interest in this project and could have significant potential input and influence in its success. It may be as an adviser, association director, instructor, a leader in the profession, site administrator, librarian, investor (angel or otherwise) or even as an Alpha testing student or licensee that your interest lies. There is a need, not just for teachers, site administrators, librarians and business advisers but for someone in each and every county to input site-relevant data about legal services, associations and even events in their local area. There is a way that every paralegal can assist in this project.
Connecting the Academy
The knowledge and wisdom that the Elders of our profession is one of our greatest assets but it is no surprise that elders are the least adaptive to technological advancements. By providing an simple interactive platform where elders can connect with licensees, students, and professional associations we can best retain and leverage that knowledge to the benefit of everyone. Providing a way that elders can contribute late into their lives can enhance their well-being and self-worth. This is a laudable goal.
Legal Centre has created a special site for the Elders to make connecting to others quick and easy as well as providing each a customized virtual desktop for their own use. It is hoped that the Elders will participate in an Advisory Counsel to help guide the development of the Legal Centre and to assist in establishing and promulgating voluntary standards for our profession.
Management
Effectiveness means not just 'doing things' but 'getting things done', and 'done right', whatever the job is is. By connecting the actors so that we can leverage each other, the VIRTUAL PLATFORM could increase effectiveness in all the areas listed here. We could even provide a variety of substantive aids to any legal practice. Business and legal templates, marketing scripts and a sample chart of accounts are just a few on the list of valuable substantive items that could be enbedded right into the system.
We could provide business plans, sample contract templates, management guidelines business setup processes relating to local, and provincial licensing requirement outlines
Marketing
We could provide marketing ads and scripts as well as social media administration.
Legal Practice
We could provided legal templates and procedural outlines and legal articles. Combined with online assistance, the law library and legal classes at the Academy, this platform could help any licensee to become the best legal practitioner they can be.
Professional & HR
We could provide CPD guides, assistance with the LSO practice review, resume and cover letter drafting assistance to mention just a few. Using the Virtual Office platform itself would increase technological competence in the new Digital Age
Systems Tech
We could provide real-time tech support. Whether it is syncing contacts from a cellphone to a practice management software package or helping install additional programs on your hard drive there are uncountable technology issues that have to be resolved to do business efficiently. With the advent of the Digital Age utilizing modern technology to its fullest is a matter of business survival.

Supplementary info on about Associations
Again CONNECTIVITY is the key. This platform is designed to bring individuals and groups together.
Part 1 left off by saying that the foundations for this project have already been laid. In fact, a working model of the platform is operational now. The first part, a public website has been in existence with the legal name LegalCentre.ca for two decades. . A more detailed background is helpful to understand the original genesis and its re-birth ... renamed the 'Phoenix Project' ... because it JUST WON'T DIE! A little supplementary personal information is required for this.
Its origins correspond to the dawning of the Digital Age in early the 1990's. You might note the oversized monitor on the desk in the original pic of the lobby. It as an idea ahead of its time. Legal Centre was a bricks and mortar business that provided part-time office facilities to a number of law related professionals in Stratford, Ontario in 1995. It came about because of the need for office space that I required for my first paralegal office, the first in the city.
At the time I had been operating additional offices in Kitchener and London, Ontario with a local partner in each under the name Paralegal Court Agents (PCA). This suddenly expanded to ten locations in southern Ontario with training for the local office owners at the Stratford location. As time progressed, the idea of providing a plethora of legal services to the public, leveraging the emerging technology to facilitate connectivity between physically distant people and locations never died but its was, at that time, not yet to be.
Legal Centre Academy
Virtual Offices and Unified Communications are going to dominate the future. This platform provides the opportunity to become an early adopter without the teething problems that normally comes with adopting new technology.
The sites in blue are Legal Centre Portal Sites allowing access to the sites directly below that site. Portal sites also contain components (newsfeeds, calendars, documents and such) with information specific to the site groups below it. The Visitors' Gateway Site is accessible via the LegalCentre.ca public website but the PUBLIC can not access the Legal Centre Members Site, which, except for a Guest Pass requires a membership. This chart includes the entire Legal Centre internal site structure with a few exceptions although others sites are planned. .

About
Worldwide, more and more students are taking advantage of virtual education options. As students, parents, and educators embrace the individualization and flexibility of online learning, this growth is likely to continue. With this in mind, it’s becoming critical for school and district administrators to have a plan in place to offer virtual options for students and, even more importantly, to make sure that students are set up for success in these programs.
* So, as an administrator, what can you do to offer a virtual program option designed to support students—whether they’re working entirely independently or taking a combination of online and in-person courses? Here are six best practices to pave a path to student success:
* Set clear goals to recruit the right students. Every successful virtual learning program starts with clear goals. School staff must understand what challenge needs to be solved in order to design an effective program and determine which students will thrive within it. Have specific goals from the outset to set the tone and direction for your program and prime your students for success.
* Create a student application and vetting process. Virtual learning requires strong time-management skills and plenty of self-direction on the students’ parts.
* Enlist support from the student's parents or partner. This an important key to success once your virtual program is up and running because online students won’t have the same robust, in-building support system in place that traditional students do.
* Sample business letters to clients, courts and others
* Labels for case files, trial books & activity sheets

It turns out that all cultures seem to have music (as well as dancing), and all appear to possess songs with actual words in the local language
A certain nostalgia passed over me when I thumbed through a new scientific paper titled “Universality and diversity in human song” this week. The paper, which appears in Science and has 19 named authors from hither and yon, is an interesting example of a new research frontier sometimes called the “digital humanities.” It represents a large collective effort to arrive at an answer to the question whether music has existed in every human culture. I’ll go ahead and spoil the ending: it definitely looks like a yes.
Poets and critics have always talked of music as a universal, even defining characteristic of the human species. This is a belief most people would think of as natural, even axiomatic. But for precisely this reason, it has always been doubted by anthropologists, ethnomusicologists, sociologists, and others working in the modern scholarly tradition.
They are trained to be skeptical, or to deny, whether anything can be “universal” among humans or cultures. And even if everybody has some kind of music, there is no reason to suppose that any feature of it is innate, biologically programmed, or cross-cultural. I'll go ahead and spoil the ending: it definitely looks like a yes
A question like this is smack-dab in the centre of the humanities, so how would we go about settling it? If you were a traditionalist, a monk or an Oxford don perhaps, you could dedicate a few decades to ransacking the world’s ethnomusical literature and seeing what conclusions might result from squinting at it. Or maybe you could attack the problem by means of experiment. As the Science paper explains, there have been stabs at taking music into remote places and seeing if Isolated Ethnic Group X attaches the same descriptors to a collection of tunes as does Ragbag of Broke American College Students Y.
In the 21st century, we have the possibility of a third approach to the question: to wit, the digital humanities. The DH way starts by noticing that all the difficult legwork has already been done. We have detailed ethnographic notes gathered from hundreds of cultures that were still in a relative state of innocence vis-a-vis global influences. And we have a vast treasury of recordings of their music. No one can read all of the notes, or listen to all of the music, but we can now get at it with — ta-da! Computers!
We are speaking here of “artificial intelligence.” In this setting it means that the researchers sampled a cross-section of world cultures from a vast database of ethnographic observations, as well as a corpus of sound recordings, and used statistics and text-mining to look for trends and common features.
Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, are greeted by dancers as they arrive for a visit in the township of Nyanga in Cape Town, South Africa, as they begin a tour of the region on Sept. 23, 2019. Betram Melgas/AFP/Getty Images
It turns out that all cultures seem to have music (as well as dancing), and all appear to possess songs with actual words in the local language. The researchers identified four known types of songs that all cultures appear to possess — dances, lullabies, healing songs, and love songs — and found that when they converted the written ethnomusical descriptions of performances to variables in a three-dimensional space, the points clustered well, falling fairly neatly into the four groups.
Different societies have different distributions of musical features — some seem to sing in a more severely formal way than others, for example — but they all overlap somewhat. Study of the sound recordings — made by means of both human musicologists and automated algorithms — suggests that the tendency for songs to adhere to a tonal centre may be universal as well.
The researchers could not, however, find any sign that singing evolved from any “single, prototypical adaptive function”: hopes of deriving some grand unified theory of the evolution of music from the exercise were dashed. (The horde of authors includes Steven Pinker, the Canadian-born linguist who is a renowned popularizer of “evo-psych” ideas.)
The approach taken by the team has a certain virtue of convenience
The paper offers a lot to think about, much of it speculative or exploratory. The point of the thing is surely as much to demonstrate the power and promise of the digital-humanities idea — the idea of turning computers loose on the documentary record of humankind, compiled at large scale — as it is to make a particular argument about the nature of music.
The approach taken by the team has a certain virtue of convenience: at a bare minimum we now have a cost-effective “third thing” to try that might be no worse than the don’s approach and the experimenter’s. But their work is also practically checkable in a way that the obiter dicta of an ethnomusicologist or the findings in one experiment are not. The databases behind the Science paper are open to scrutiny, and their various calculations are in principle reproducible.
As I say, it made me nostalgic. I went to graduate school in a history department, at a time and place at which the don’s view of the universe still prevailed. If any of us had been told there was a 45-million-word corpus of historians’ notes newly available for scrutiny, the expected reply would surely have been “I suppose I’d better get star

Teachers can recommend specific MOOCs to students who are self-motivated and really want to prepare for college. open up a world of possibility to students who are willing to put in the effort to take advantage of them.

Today, there is now a cadre of trained paralegals that are capable of actually doing the job. They are eager to embark on the professional career they have worked hard to qualify for and are in need of a 'future-proof' vehicle in which to launch themselves. The technology too has is advancing at such a 'warp drive' speed, we, as legal professionals, will have a hard time keeping pace with public demands. This is already true.
Everything so far is all theory so Part 2 will show an outline of each BIG IDEA in practice. First what the PUBLIC will see at the public website, what they can get from the site. This is followed by an outline of the paralegal side of the site, the features and benefits.
Branding
The original incarnation had a number of challenges then that don't apply today.
1. Crucially, the sophistication and reliability of the technology had not matured sufficiently to command the trust required for legal professionals to depend on the platform.
2. Additionally, sophistication and reliability of the paralegals was a problem. With little or no legal training and legal complexity ever increasing, the franchise model was not appropriate. The 'good' franchisees didn't acknowledge the set up that had been done to enable them to operate, and the 'bad' franchisees often left a legal mess to clean up in the company name.
3. The implementation of the Arthur Wishart Act 2000 (the Franchise Disclosure Act), while meant for large franchises like Subway or McDonald's, opened up the company to litigation on a recurring basis.
4. On a personal note, operating what was effectively three full-time business, (my own private practice, the PCA franchise and the Legal Centre), was unsustainable over the long term.

This is a customizable, unified, virtual PBX system
Central to the CLEEK paradigm is COLLABORATION. It was thought that the internet would free knowledge for the benefit of all but in fact 'information silos' have emerged in vast 'data lakes' accessible to select few. There is an infinite amount of specialized legal knowledge scattered, helter skelter, about the paralegal universe in 'bits & bites'. We need to 'unlock & democratize all the tribal knowledge that we have in the profession.'

Collaboration helps the profession produce leaders and teachers.
The unconnected silos of information come from various sources. A wealth of knowledge goes untapped for lack of being collected, organized and made accessible for dissemination.
The Legal Centre platform facilitates collaboration throughout the profession 'en mass'.
For our puroposes think of 'Commercial Insight' as 'Professional Wisdom". This platform can increase our information base on an individual and a collective basis and move us to a better understanding of our profession.
The Legal Centre Virtual Office provides a standardized universal platform enabling more and better connectivity with others.
Sources of Knowledge
We can leverage the technology to harness the unique knowledge base that each one of us inherently posesses by vitue of our being in practice. Once the information sharing protocols are in place, the AI can search for and extract the relevant information.
Currently the collaboration between paralegals is sporadic and unstructured. While there are various 'groups' the format, protocols and purposes are not co-ordinated. Such collaboration is mostly to point-to-point or limited group interaction. The Legal Centre platform is replete with potential collaborative structures and tools opening channels of interaction and creating opportunities to collaborate in an effective and efficient way.
This kind of individual and collective insight can be instrumental in identifying problems and finding solutions to issues we face in our professional practice.
The Legal Centre platform facilitates collaboration within a company or team on a local level.
This magnifies the practical value of that interaction and enhances professional growth. Leaders naturally enrich the lives of others.
The more paralegals that use this system the greater the depth of collective wisdom that we can call upon to overcome the professional challenges we face.
Structures
Processes
Co-ordination
Standards
By working together we can establish the procedures and protocols that enable many diverse groups and individuals to utilize this platform easily and seamlessly. By doing so, the VIRTUAL OFFICE could help paralegals and everyone else, get the job done faster and with greater ease.
By developing profession-wide standards, we can help paralegals help paralegals. With standards, the ability to help, or get help on a file on a file, will be established for everyone. Incompatible or even different systems can result in lost time and critical errors in the processing of files. That should be a thing of the past.
Bringing together various structural elements like the virtual desktop, the website, the library and the virtual PBX this 'VIRTUAL OFFICE ' platform could provide a complete turn-key virtual office customized for the legal professional. This platform can help paralegals to be more effective at whatever their scope of practice may be. The base structure can be customized to suit the specific needs of associations, affiliates, students, teachers and seniors.
By creating common structures and processes, we can help licensees to connect, build relationships and co-ordinate with others both individually, as a licensee and collectively as a profession. This leads to one of the most beneficial effects of this project ... the development of KOMMUNITY.
The End of the Beginning:
This presentation 'Paralegal 2020 Vision' is an attempt to show what is possible for the paralegal profession in the coming year(s) by working together. But while ... "I feel a sense of possibilities, I feel the wrench of hard realities." This vision is too big for one person and would not be easy to achieve. The public website, in and of itself, is a BIG IDEA that would take significant effort to fully utilize. Each section to highlighted, the Paralegal Virtual Office, the Associations' Portal, the Affiliates' Kiosks, the Students' & Teachers' Desks, the Seniors' Lounge and the Academy, are the same way. These things are not easy, but they are not impossible, and to quote JFK, "We do these things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard."
Each one of these BIG IDEAS has its own unique benefits worth pursuing in its own right.
Collectively, these projects enhance each other and magnify the value to everyone involved, the profession and the public at large. To reiterate ... "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts." This platform has the ability to harness our numbers and leverage our individual strengths in ways currently unforeseen. This project could be our map to the future as a profession. Inspired by a unified vision, structured co-operation can evolve in our profession to the betterment of all.
End of Part 1. Please take a break to consider what has been presented here. This is the place to stop if you find this of little interest. However, if something here has intreged or inspired you, please continue to Part 2 to see the practical application of this platform for each section.
