The seven characteristics of a strong empire

Introduction

In order to have a powerful long-lasting empire you will need 7 important characteristics to make this happen. If you have most of these characteristics, but not all of them you will still have a decent empire, but it will not be as long lasting and powerful as the empires in the past. I hope my presentations can influence you to make a empire as your own one day.

Ottoman

The empire I got assigned to was the empire Ottoman. This empire has lasted from the mid-7th century BC to the mid-2nd century BC. A lot famous people and objects has came out of this empire long ago.

My Empire

Religion

Characteristics

There were a lot of religions during the Ottoman Empire. The most common religions were Judaism, Christianity, and Muslim. Jews and Christians were considered inferior to Muslims causing Jews and Christians to pay extra taxes because of their religion. Surprisingly, Christians and Jews had some power to control their own community affairs and practice their religions. The Ottoman Empire's religions back then were very unfair because if you were a certain religion you had to pay extra taxes, but you had more rights to buy more land and objects than the religions who had to pay a small amount of money for taxes. Back than, the religions lacked of a lot of common sense making it confusing and unfair for all of the religions.

Effective Leader

Effective Leaders

One of the most well-known and respected sultans during the Ottoman Empire is Suleiman the Magnificent. He led the empire into its golden age through expansion and reforming the legal system. Suleiman is also known for his desire to end religious persecution in his empire. Sadly, he only ruled for 72 years so for the other years the Ottoman Empire was still running it was led by other sultans such as Osman the first, Orhan, Murad the first, Bayezid the first, Mehmed the first, Murad the second, Mehmed the second and more. Even though there were a lot of sultans and rulers that ruled before and after Suleiman the Magnificent he was still, by far, the best sultan during the Ottoman Empire. He could even be up for the running for the best sultan that ever ruled an empire.

Government

Government

The government actually had a pretty interesting form of government. The Ottoman Empire made a system called the Devshirme system that began in the 1300's. Christians give up some of their male children to the government so they can use it for the governments need. The men were trained to do military service or to join the Ottoman military, you may think that this sounds like a cruel punishment for the men, but it was actually a honor to get picked by the government to work for them. Most male christians went to the military elite group called the Janissary. This filled a lot of jobs for men and the men had an opportunity to daily run the empire day by day! This was a real honor to have an important job like this one. One downside of being a Janissary is you are not allowed to marry. Ottoman's government made this rule so they wouldn't create a group of people to try to overpower the sultans. When people around the world noticed how mean and unfair this system is it got banned in the 1600s making Christian men free from being controled by the government.

More Characteristics

Social Hierarchy

Like most empires Ottoman had a social hierachy, but Ottoman's social heirarchy consisted of four major social classe which are the men of the pen, men of the sword, men of the negotiation, and the men of the husbandry. These may not sound like your normal social hierarchy, but each empire it unique in their own way. The men of the pen class was the highest and most respected social class which contained of lawyers, doctors, judges, and scientists. People under the social class men of the sword consist of people who are good at warfare equipment and protects the country against emenies invading the Ottoman empire. This is the second highest class in the social hierarchy. The second-lowest class is men of the negotiation which consist of people that are merchants, artisans, and tax collectors. These people were respected, but made very little money causing them to be the second-lowest social class. The last and lowest social class in Ottoman is men of the husbandry. This social class requires the least amount of skill and experience causing men f the husbandry to be at the bottom of the social class. People who are in this social class are farmers and herders who own a land to produce crops for the entire empire and themselves. These people surprisingly make a lot of money then expected.

Territory

Throughout the the years the Ottoman empire been ruling over 695,000 miles of land. The countries that the Ottoman empire rules included present-day Iran, Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey, Iraq, the Levant, and other small areas of Asia.

Water Matters

WATER MATTERS

The Ottoman empire uses water in many different ways. They use water to function their aqueduct found in many parts of their territory. People from Ottoman use the aqueducts daily to wash their hands, take a shower, use the bathroom, and to drink water usually during dinner. The people of the Ottoman empire first thought that that drinking water especially at dinnertime can.."protect people stomach...."They also said that it helped with digesting. After a while tons of people disobeyed the rule by drinking wine while cleaning their houses causing tons of people to get in trouble. Soon the empire as a whole realized that the rule wasn't helping anyone, but hurting people since people will drink so much water that they will get very sick, so the rule was changed in sometime in the middle-age. They also use water to activate the many fountains found all over the Ottoman empire. They use fountain water, lake water, ocean water, pond water, and any type of water they can get to go into the fountain. Since they were so many fountains in the Ottoman empire, they use any kind of water they can find to operate them. The men of the husbandry, the people in the lowest social class such as farmers and herders, use water to feed their animals so they can produce food and for the farmers to be able to sell what the animal produces, such as eggs, milk, etc and the animal itself such as, pigs and chickens.
