History of Basketball

History

The history of basketball started with the invention in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts by Canadian PE instructor James Naismith as a less injury-prone sport than the sport football. Naismith was 31-year old graduate student when he made the inside sport to keep people indoor during the winters. Then later they made hoops with metal rims and wooden backboards. There was referee that whistled when there was a traveled. They divided the teams in two, 5v5 and when the quarter ended they'd have some subs. They had 12 minute quarters, and when you are out of the game you get a rest. You have to dribble the ball or you will get a travel or a double-dribble, which is catching it and dribbling again or dribbling with two hands at the same time.

NBA

The day in the year 1949, after a damaging three-year battle to win both players and fans, the two leagues Basketball Association of America (BAA) and the National Basketball League (NBL) merge to form a popular league today National Basketball Association call the NBA!!!!!! There were many good players when it began, George Mikan, Bill Russel, Bob Cousy, etc. The league was so popular in 1948-1949 George Mikan was insanely popular because he was the best. There weren't many teams as there are now. In this time Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant are the greatest of all time. I want you to know that you should really get into basketball and into learning about the NBA!!

How to Play Basketball

How to Play

- The player must bounce, or dribble, the ball with one hand while moving both feet. If at anytime both hands touch the ball or the player stops dribbling, the player must only move one foot. The foot that is still is called the pivot foot. - The basketball player can only take one turn at dribbling. After a player has stopped dribbling they cannot start another dribble. - The ball must stay in bounds. If the offensive team looses the ball out of bounds the other team gets control of the basketball. - The players hand must be on top of the ball while dribbling. If they touch the bottom of the ball when dribbling and continue to dribble this is called carrying the ball and the player will lose the ball to the other team. - Once the offensive team crosses half court, they may not go back into the back court. This is called a back court violation.

Defensive Rules!!

- The main rule for the defensive player is not to foul. A foul is described as gaining an unfair advantage through physical contact.

Rules for everyone!!

- Although the foul rule is describes above as a defensive rule, it applies exactly the same to all players on the including offensive players. - Basketball players cannot kick the ball or hit it with their fist. - No player can touch the basketball while is traveling downward towards the basket or if it is on the rim.

Positions!

All the positions are Point Guard (PG), Shooting Guard (SG), Small Forward (SF), Power Forward (PF), and the big man Center (C).
