History of Burqa

Origin

The word Burqa was in use in the seventh century, and it meant "a piece of clothing used as protection". The burqa is said to have first been a thing in Persia. When Islam entered Persia, the burqa was adopted into the Islamic culture.

Styles

There are many different styles other than the burqa. There's the

  • Niqab- a veil covering everything but the eyes, worn with a loose black robe.
  • Hijab- a veil that covers the hair and neck, but not the face.
  • Burqa- a veil that covers your entire head with a mesh eye slot. Worn with a robe.
  • Chador- a full cloak that covers everything but the face.
  • Dupatta- A scarf draped around the head loosely. Commonly worn with matching garments.

  • Group Identity
  • equality
  • liberation from unwelcomed advances
  • Badge of ethnic honor

Why might some women prefer the burqa

Why might some women find it oppressive

  • when forced upon it limits human rights
  • can appear as inherently suspicious
  • could lead to religious descrimination
  • hides there identity

What the burqa's symbolizes

The burqa is a symbol of oppression and dominance over Muslim women. Its also a reminder to the Taliban who abused the rights and freedoms of Afghan women. To the rest of the world a burqa is a symbol of Islamic extremist or even terrorism. Which is effecting Muslim immigrants into the rest of the world

After the fall of the Taliban in 2001, women continued to wear the burqa. They wore them because it is "part of the Afghan culture and has been used for ages". Recently with America backing out of Afghanistan, the Taliban have taken over Afghanistan once again. And making the burqa mandatory. The Taliban defend the mandate by saying its apart of the Sharia and Afghan culture.
