The Historical Setting of the United States of America: From Independence to the Civil War.

Reference novels: The Scarlet Letter. The Red Badge of Courage.

Introduction

From the discovery of America, first in 1000 by Leif Eriksson and then by Colombus in 1492 to the configuration of the country we know today, many significant and critical changes have happened.

1. Introduction

Nevertheless, our first focus of attention moves forward in time to the year 1584, when Sir Walter Raleigh founded the first English colony in America, Virginia, and even later on, in 1620, when the Pilgrim Fathers (protestants) left Britain for America, leading the way to the 13 British colonies in America.

The present unit also aims to provide some relevant information about colonial literature of 19th in America, namely represented by two reference novels:

The Scarlett Letter and The Red Badge of Courage.

As we shall see, these two novels were both shaped by and reflected the prevailing ideologies of the day, which means that they are a reference point in which social, economic, cultural, technological and political allegiances are placed very much to the fore.

Actually, The Scarlett Letter (1850) reflects the situation within the previous years to the Civil War (1861-1865)

whereas The Red Badge of Courage (1893) reflects its aftermath.

Conclusion

Literature and literary language is one of the most salient aspect of educational activity.

In classrooms all kinds of literary language (poetry, drama, novel, prose, newspapers…), either spoken or written, is going on for most of the time. Yet, handling literary productions in the past and, in particular, American History and Literature, makes relevant the analysis of the main literary works, which reflect the social, political, economical and cultural situation of the period.

The US won its independence thanks to their effort and determination. With this unit we can better understand the sense of patriotism and deep feeling of independence that is still palpable in Americans.

6. Conclusion

But how do American literature tie in with the new curriculum?

American literature may be approached in linguistic terms, regarding form and function (morphology, lexis, structure, form) and also from a cross-curricular perspective (History, English, French, Spanish Language and Literature). So, American literature is easily approached by means of the subjects of History, Language and Literature by establishing a parallelism with the Spanish one (age, literature forms, events). In addition, one of the objectives of teaching the English language is to provide good models of almost any kind of literary productions for future studies.

The main aims that our currently educational system focuses on are mostly sociocultural, to facilitate the study of cultural themes, as our students must be aware of their current social reality within the European framework.
