Trans-Pecos Food Web!

The Sun

1

All basic food chains/food webs start with the sun. The sun is the reason why we still have life on this planet, and with no sun means there would be no more life on Earth. The reason why the sun is always the start in the food chain/web, is it gives plants, which are producers, radiant energy to help them make their own chemical energy that the use for food, through the process of photosynthesis.

Producers

2

Producers are the next part in the food web. Producers are plants and autotrophs, which means they make their own food. They get the energy from the sunlight to make the food that use in order to grow

Examples

Examples of Producers in the Trans-Pecos Region would include:

* Soap Tree Yucca

* New Mexico Agave

Primary Consumers

3

Primary consumers are animals that eat plants, the animals can either be a herbivore, only eats producers, or an omnivore, eats producers and consumers.

The secondary consumers are the ones that will eat any primary consumer. A secondary consumer will either be a carnivore, only eats meat, or an omnivore.

Tertiary Consumers:

The tertiary consumers are the highest level of consumer, meaning they are in the highest level of the food chain/web, and they do most of they time do not get eaten by other cosumers. They are most of the time carnivores, meaning they only eat meat. Tertiary also might even eat primary cosumers.

5

One of the questions often asked is "Are humans tertiary consumers?"

Well one of the main reasons why humans are not technically considered tertiary consumers, is we are omnivores. We as humans CAN eat lions, bears, and other tetiary cosumers. But, since they only eat meat being carnivores, we do not get all the nutrients we need from producers that our body needs. So, that is why we are classified as secondary consumers.
