How Does Social Media Negatively Affect Mental Health

My Topic

Research Topic

When deciding upon a research topic, I wanted to choose one that has meaning behind it. Over the past two years, with forced isolation among us, students struggled immensely with mental health issues. It is crucial, as a society, we understand these issues and help in the best way we can.

This informative article aims to focus on the negative effects social media has for those using and ways to overcome it. The Harvard Medical Program argues that social media has shown that it can lead to a variety of mental health issues such as anxiety/depression and FOMO (fear of missing out), yet there are ways to still overcome these challenges. Overcoming it by setting a time restriction towards social media and re-teaching a healthy media use. Overall, the source provides a factual standpoint in supporting my research that social media has prolonged negative effects on a younger audience. This article conducted experiments supporting the aim that social media takes a toll on kids.

Shafer states the greater use of social media has a greater influence on younger kids causing common mental disorders such as depression. In this way, it affects everyday encounters such as socializing and connecting with others. This source provides lots of generalization that can be reliability information by using many statical data making the source very useful for my research topic.

This article focuses on the causes, effects, and challenges teenagers face. It allows readers to understand the relatability that many teenagers face because of social media. This article correlates to my research topic and allows my research to have a wide range of sources as this one is structured like an article but includes comments from readers to appear like a blog.

This persuasive article comes from the perspective of a young college students, expressing the unprepared effects social media causes. Anna Barcellos conveys the stress of unrealistic body images social media portrays and how that affects young kids and even college students, like herself. While schools reinforce the negative connotation surrounding bully, they fail to mention the effects of critiquing different body sizes. My source provides a first-hand perspective surrounding the negative effects social media causes, coming from a student herself. However, it can appear opinionated as the author is bias due to encountering dealing with these struggles.

This source can be useful as it focuses on a different perspective on the negative effects social media causes. While my other sources focus on FOMO, anxiety, depression, this source focuses on body dysmorphia.

This research experiment is a great source where it differs from the articles or blog previously used. Its goal is to see the effects it causes which the findings concluded it negatively affects learning activities and delayed bedtime. This research study is a different outlook from my other sources and focuses on a different perspective than my other sources.
