College volunteer fairs are one of the best ways to meet students, as well as other community partners. Volunteer fairs are usually held in late August or September. VISTAs in the past have collaborated with agency volunteer coordinators to attend volunteer fairs at the following institutions:
Catholic Charities and the Youth Mentor Program has had extremely succesful partnerships with the Vanderbilt Peabody College. This department contains many undergraduate and graduate programs that are focused on international educaiton, mental health services, linguistics, and more. The Peabody College has been our largest source of recruits and has previously encouraged our program to let them know of any further needs or potential areas for collaboration.
The majority of previous college outreach has been done through targeted email campaigns to local colleges departments, clubs, or programs that are relevant to youth mentoring.
College recruitment has been the most succesful when targeting students who are interested in areas like education, international affaris, or social psychology.

Our program has had great success in targeting graduate students with a specific interest in education, social work, etc. See examples of some of the larger graduate programs avaialble localy.
The Peabody College has been our largest source of mentors. The college focuses on combining education with human development and has a lot of students who are interested in the intersection of educational access and social capital. Many students also come from an international background. There graduate program has been very open to formal partnerships and has previously advertised for the program across the entire college.
UT has a wide network of graduate social work students across the state, including a large Nashville campus and an online program. Students may be interested in volunteering and could also be recruited for internship or staff openings.
MTSU also has a large number of undergraudate and graduate programs and many students may be located closer to clients in areas like Murfreesboro, La Vergne, or other parts of Rutherford County. Recruitment can be expanded to target MTSU students who may be more accesible for mentees in that area.
It may be beneficial to connect with college organizations that are focused on cultural identity.
To do this, go to the college's list of campus organizations, and filter for cultural organizations.
For example: Vanderbilt's campus website is, https://anchorlink.vanderbilt.edu/organizations . You can use a filter to show organizations focused on "Culture/Diversity."
Leadership societies are community organizations that promote things like leadership, service, community engagement, and more. Many societies require community service from their members. As such, they provide a good opportunity to recruit volunteers and engage
community members.
Community organizations include informal orgniazation like libraries, parks, churches, etc., or more formal community establishments focused on causes that are relevant to the Nashvilel community.
Connecting with community organizations can be a good way to recruit mentors, or to
establish mor formal
partnerships that can
benefit the program.
