Over the last few weeks, remote work has become the new norm, and digital transformation
has accelerated.
Let’s take a deeper look into how we measure things - and the data-backed science that can visualize how teams communicate. This practice is called Sociomapping.
Let’s take a look at evolving trends that are occurring in the world of business during the COVID-19 pandemic.
CEO of LinkedIn Jeff Weiner suggests the importance of carving out “buffer time” when working from home.
This is one of their key metrics - they measure to ensure teams incorporate time blockers.
Cisco's Webex saw a record-breaking number of 240,000 online signups within a 24-hour period, and now handles 14 billion meeting minutes per month. That’s more than double where they were before the crisis.
Cisco has focused on privacy more than ever before. Cisco’s CEO said in a recent blog regarding Webex Security,
"At Cisco, we believe data privacy is a fundamental human right."
Verizon purchased Zoom’s rival video conferencing company, BlueJeans.
This acquisition shows they’re trying to compete in an industry that’s helping remote workers connect and thereby capitalizing on the remote work trend.
Many collaboration tools have been able to boost their growth during the pandemic. The collaboration web app Notion raised 50 million USD in March.
Notion can be used daily for roadmaps, Google Drive, notes, planning, and a single-source knowledge base.
The company Time is Ltd. believes that to truly understand how well teams work from home, it's important to understand how well that team utilizes collaboration tools.
Time is Ltd.’s is working to understand what communication channels they currently use as a team of 30 people.
Time is Ltd has quickly grown from:
in that time they’ve worked to understand if the communication interfaces they use fit their team.
They aggregated the data to evaluate how their company uses Slack, emails, and meeting data.
Product leaders and engineering teams communicate predominantly using Slack.
Ops teams, marketing teams, and clients predominantly use the classic meeting platform to communicate
Slack is the dominant platform that is used for internal communication, and meetings are the dominant method for discussing bigger topics.
Communication has changed - clients and data teams were very isolated in prior months and now communication has streamlined itself.
This shift in communication patterns confirm the hypothesis that these teams are working more efficiently together.
When you compare other organization’s team use of Slack based on proximity, the results show that product and engineering teams, data teams, and management lean heavily on this product.
Data and management teams lead the way with the use of meetings as a communication method, followed by marketing teams.
Organization leaders probably have a hypothesis about how their teams work and communicate. Now, we have data to help us see reality.
Cyril Höschl, Ph.D., and Radvan Bahbouh, Ph.D., invented Sociomapping in 1996, to visualize interrelationship data.
This powerful science is also used by NASA and other corporations.
It reflects social and team dynamics in a way the human brain can understand within seconds.
Whether you want to develop a remote, agile, or leadership team, Sociomapping visualizes the current and optimal team set-up, revealing potential issues within communication behavior.
Cyril Höschl, Ph.D., has also learned how to use Sociomapping from passive data like emails, calendars, and Slack to understand team communication.
