Marie Curie was born on the 7th of November in 1867 in Warsaw, the capital of Poland.
Family Life
Marie Curie was the youngest of five children in the Sklodowska family. After her father lost his job, the family struggled and was forced to renters into their small apartment. Religious as a child, Curie rejected her faith after her sister died of typhus (a severe fever) in 1876. Two years later she lost her mother to tuberculosis, a terrible disease that attacks the lungs and bones.
What was Marie Curie famous for?
Marie Curie and her husband, Pierre Curie worked together investigating radioactivity, building on the work of the German physicist Roentgen and the French physicist Becquerel. In July 1898, the Curies announced the discovery of a new chemical element, polonium. At the end of the year, they announced the discovery of another, radium. The Curies, along with Becquerel, were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903
How did Marie Curie discover radium and polonium?
On April 20, 1902, Marie and Pierre Curie successfully isolate radioactive radium salts from the mineral pitchblende in their laboratory in Paris. In 1898, the Curies discovered the existence of the elements radium and polonium in their research of pitchblende.
How did Marie Curie die?
Marie Curie died on July 4, 1934, of aplastic anemia, which can be caused by prolonged exposure to radiation. So, ironically, Marie Curie died from her own discovery!
