NEUROFEEDBACK TRAINING

Neurobrain

What is neurofeedback?

What is...?

Definition

How it works

  • Neurofeedback is a scientifically based method for measuring and monitoring brain and shows how certain patterns of behaviour can be explained by a particular set of brain wave patterns.

  • The goal is to optimise brain activity in order to positively and sustainably influence cognition, attention, behaviour and wellbeing.

We will be discussing

Application

Neurofeedback training is effective in helping a broad range of conditions such as:

Targeted Audiences

Age

What is the minimum age for Neurofeedback Training?

There is no strict lower age limit. The current norm takes the beginning of primary school as a minimum, but it can also be tried with younger children on an individual basis.

There is no upper age limit. Older people with weakening cognitive abilities are among those who have the most to gain from neurofeedback.

How To Use

  • Electrodes are applied to the individual’s scalp.

  • The signals picked up by the electrodes are sent to computer and processed.

  • Brainwaves frequencies turned to a combination of visual and audio feedback.

How To Use

Quantitative EEG

qEEG

  • Quantitative EEG (qEEG) is the analysis of the digitized EEG, and in lay terms this sometimes is also called “Brain Mapping”.

  • Quantitative Electroencephalography (qEEG) is a procedure that processes the recorded EEG activity from a multi-electrode recording using a computer.

Checking the device

BWM: Brain Wave Measurement

  • BWM is aimed to measure EEG. Once it starts, it automatically measures 40 seconds for opened eyes - 40 seconds for closed eyes - 40 seconds for open eyes. Both visual and audio cues will be given.

  • The EEG data will be saved automatically after the measurement was done.

SFA: Self Feedback Ability

  • This program is to check the status of the brain's autonomic nervous activity. It is most important to identify the brain's activity status by confirming the distribution of Alpha, SMR and Beta waves.

  • Clients have to watch the circle at the middle of the screen comfortably.

Personalised Neurofeedback Training

  • Below is the example of the pre-assigned personalised games that will be used during the training process. They are designed to train the trainees' brainwaves to cater their needs accordingly.

  • Trainees are required to either look at the screen comfortably or play (using mouse) the games while their brain activity is being measured and trained.

SOP

Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

Wash and decontaminate hands

  • Before and after the training (for the trainers and clients)
  • Between contact with different clients (if needed)

Personal Protective Equipment

Standard Precautions

  • The trainers are required to use face mask that required providing direct care to clients, who work in situations where they may have contact with unwell clients.

  • Support staff including hand sanitizer, face mask, alcohol swab and necessary medical aides.

  • Ensure all reusable equipment are decontaminated, cleaned appropriately before being used on another client.

Attending the Clients

  • Greet the clients and give careful instructions and explanations to clients/ caregiver so that they can comply fully during the training.

  • Make a proper eye contact with the clients and keep the instruction short as per in the training room so they will be able to follow on:
  • Face the computers
  • Hands placed appropriately on their laps
  • Sit properly
  • To stay as quiet as possible in the room
  • Let’s have a fun training session together
  • Praise them (i.e.; “Good Job”, “Well Done”)

  • Use verbal and body language to attract the client to follow the instructions.

  • Trainers’ are not allowed to provide any oral intake for the clients.

  • As each instruction is followed, praise the child.

Safety and Precautions

  • Trainers are required to send the clients to their parent(s) or caregiver(s) and have a proper handover once the training session is done.

  • Trainers are required to ‘take care/baby sit’ the clients if the training session is done while they are still in the premises.

  • Keep all the unnecessary objects away from the child to prevent any injuries, especially choking hazards.

  • Ensure a trainer must assist when the child go to washroom (For female child, ONLY female trainers can chaperon to the toilet and vice versa for male child)

Safety and Precautions

Ensuring Neurofeedback Scanning and Training SOP

  • Regular sleeping pattern is needed one day before the scanning.

  • Ensure on no alcohol intake 24 hours before the scanning.

  • Not allowed to do scanning after exercise due to brainwave changes.

  • 3 days prior to the scanning must not have taken any medications, if compulsory on daily medications’, should inform the trainer.

  • 2 hours of gap in between is needed after a client wakes up.

  • Must use laptop only to reduce artifact issues (For Star Labs Venue)

  • Room usage (depends on the children cooperation)

  • Must not be too hungry or too full (after meals)

  • 30 minutes gap after a short nap

  • Cannot do scanning after the sunset (7pm), as the child/client may be tired.

  • Keep the environment clean and quiet, no one can enter the room during the scanning session.

  • No electrical devices are allowed to be in the scanning room.

  • Give clear instructions to the client what to do in scanning

  • Make sure the client is able to follow, such as Open Eyes, Close Eyes, Look at the computer.

  • Trainer has to be at least (standing) 2-3 meters away from the client while scanning.

  • Client must sit comfortably with minimum movement.

  • Client must not talk while doing the scanning.

  • Client must look at the screen the whole scanning period.

Standard operating rules during the scanning and training

Rules During the Scanning and Training

  • Zero movements should be observed, especially during the initial scanning, place hands on the laps

  • Listen to the instructions to have your eyes closed in the middle of the scanning

  • To open your eyes after the close eyes session

  • To remain seated quietly during the 2nd and 3rd part of the scanning

  • There would a part which they would be focusing on the yellow squares or the huge circle that would appear in the middle of the screen

  • Once the scanning ends, the client would be able to sit at ease and start their audio and visual game session

  • The training will be in progress with audio and visual which provides feedback to the brain with a reward system of a ‘ting’ sound

To ensure the effectiveness of neurofeedback training

Dos and Dont's

  • Within the training period, children need to have enough sleep during the night. Meanwhile, they should sleep before 11pm every night and also not to have any intense activities or exercises before their bedtime.

  • Try to reduce food which contains high amount of sugar or artificial flavor, snacks, or other junk food (We suggest for parents to use peanuts to replace snacks for children).

  • Consume more fruits, food that is high in protein and multi-grains too .

  • Avoid food that would trigger allergen levels during their training period

  • Have enough nutrition intake, parents may want to consult nutritionist if needed.

  • Motivate and praise younger clients that perform well during their training session. Children reacts best with continuous praise and would be highly motivated, preferably with a synchronized reward system from both the trainers and parents.
  • Performing more activities that could relax and ease of their physical stress with exercises, such as swimming and jogging.

  • Be punctual for the training session, if possible, get them to have the training on alternate days. For example, Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and so on.

  • This will provide a better effect for their training session. As for special needs children is best to enable at least five days of neurofeedback training to maximize its effect in the brain neurons regulations.

  • Neurofeedback will not have a best effect if:
  • Too hungry clients whom cannot focus and have low energy (clients may consume light meals before the scanning)
  • Too full stomach after a heavy meal
  • Regularly skipping between sessions
