The Second Battle of Marne

World War 1 Planes

Why did the war start?

Russian Revolution

On July 15, 1918, German troops launched what would become the last German offensive of the war, attacking French forces (joined by 85,000 American troops as well as some of the British Expeditionary Force) in the Second Battle of the Marne. The Allies successfully pushed back the German offensive and launched their own counteroffensive just three days later.

World War 1 was the first conflict to use planes. They were not as useful as German U-Boats or the Royal British Navy but they still impacted greatly.

World War 1, also known as the Great War, started in 1914. The Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assasinated which made lots of people mad. This sparked a war throughout Europe that lasted 4 years. By the time it had ended, more than 16 million people had died.

From 1914 to 1916, Russia’s army mounted several offensives on World War I’s Eastern Front but was not able to break through the German's lines. Russia’s simmering instability exploded in the Russian Revolution of 1917, spearheaded by Vladimir Lenin and the Bolsheviks, which ended czarist rule and brought a halt to Russian participation in World War I. Russia reached an armistice with the Central Powers in early December 1917.

In the First Battle of the Marne, fought from September 6th to the 9th, 1914, French and British forces confronted the invading German army, which had by then penetrated deep into northeastern France, within 30 miles of Paris. The Allied troops checked the German advance and mounted a successful counterattack, driving the Germans back to the north of the Aisne River.

America Enters the War

Battle of the Isonzo

At the Paris Peace Conference, the allies realized they needed a post-war world that would safe guard them and the rest of the country from future conflicts. They called WW1 "the War to End All Wars". That goal was not achieved even with the treaty in place.

On the Eastern Front, Russian soldiers invaded the regions of East Prussia and Poland, which were German-held. They were stopped by German and Austrian forces in late August of 1914, at the Battle if Tannenberg.

The U.S wanted to remain neutral in the war. They did for a good chunk of time until German submarines started to terrorize them. They subs would blow up civilian ships and kill American people. This made America mad so we joined the war.

Planes were then used in WW1.

The Wright brothers hadjust invented planes 11 years before WW1.

The Central Powers were struggling to keep fighting on their fronts. Germany was running out of supplies and their allies surrendered. Germany was forced to seek an armistice on November 11, 1918, ending World War I.

Machine guns were then mounted on planes to make air warfare more fatal.

Germans agree to an armistice.
