Celebrations Days of France

Celebrations Days

France celebrates many cultural traditions. One of the many celebrations in France include the Nice Carnival. This carnival consists of many colourful floats and figurines made of papier-mâché according to a specific theme, hosted at the French Riviera. During the nighttime, the floats and figures are lightened up, displaying all their wonderful colours. The types of foods served during this celebration consist of corn dogs, corn on the cob, jambalaya, gumbo and sweet treats such as beignets, doughnuts and king cakes.

How did France Influence the Food Habits of Australia?

The majority of French immigrants had come to Australia during the Gold Rush and World War II. Nonetheless, they've still influenced Australian society with their own customs, namely their food habits. The French had introduced ingredients such as butter, truffle, garlic and Fleur du Sel to Australia, additionally, bringing along popular dishes such as the croissant, escargot, and grenouilles. The French were a massive influence to the growth of the wine industry in Australia. New flavours, like peach, nectarine, and cherry varieties, were also introduced.

Influence on Australia's Food Habits

Not only that, there are so many French companies, wine exhibits, and restaurants in Australia, with an estimate of 5,186 French cuisine restaurants alone in Sydney. Australia has events, festivals and even tv shows advertising French cuisine.

Chosen Traditional French Recipe: Crêpes

Traditional Recipe

Ingredients for Two

Ingredients

  • ½ cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup of milk
  • ¼ cup of water
  • 1/8 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted

1) In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and the eggs. Gradually add in the milk and water, stirring to combine. Add the salt and butter; beat until smooth.

2) Heat a lightly oiled griddle or frying pan over medium high heat. Pour or scoop the batter onto the griddle, using approximately 1/4 cup for each crepe. Tilt the pan with a circular motion so that the batter coats the surface evenly.

3) Cook the crepe for about 2 minutes, until the bottom is light brown. Loosen with a spatula, turn and cook the other side. Serve hot.
