Founded in 1325, In TlaltikpaktlI’s Center was a Mesoamerican society that flourished in central Mexico. They became a part of the Aztec empire by, allying with two other societies to overthrow their mutual rivals. Nobles, ten to twenty years of age were required to attend Calmecac or be educated at home, while commoners were required to attend Telpochcalli. Nobles learned how to read and write using glyphs. Commoners received all instructions and lessons verbally. Every child no matter what class was educated. Aztec boys were first identified as warriors with a birth ritual. This ritual involved a shield and arrow. At the age of 15, they would begin training to be warriors. Telpochcalli schools focused on preparing boys for warfare while Calmeacac schools prepared noble boys to be leaders of the military, among other things. The law required that every young man(20 years old) had to serve time in the army.

These included Tlacaxipehualiztli, a ceremony that happened in spring and honored the god of vegetation Xipe Totec. Toxcatl, an event that happened in May and honored the god of faith and destiny Tezcatlipoca. And The New Fire Rites or Toxiuhmolpilia, which was an important event that took place every 52 years. Their firm belief that the group was more important than the individuals, contributed to them being the strongest district in the city. Due to their viewpoints, their military was the fiercest in battle, which led to massive collections of tributes. Their organization was also an important factor in their success. The emperor was responsible for serving as a high priest, military commander, and being head of state. He and his council would gather to make important decisions while the commoners listened and obeyed.

The sacrifice of the xiutecuhtil princess led to a massive war that lasted several years. The population and economy declined dramatically as many died due to deaths in wars, starvation, and illness.

The excessive offerings in this district are due to the strong belief that their gods, especially the sun god tlaxcaltiliztli, need daily nourishment in the form of human blood and hearts to survive. Their success and economic reliance on agriculture are due to their irrigation techniques intensive cultivation of land in which chinampas were used, and effectiveness in crop production and trading.

Stated in The Legend Of The Five Suns, all the gods presented their hearts unto the sun god for mankind to live. Due to the fact these events occurred in teotls’ kalnakastli, they have a prominent sense of indebtedness. To satisfy their gods, the Aztecs of teotls’ kalnakastli, have daily offerings of hummingbirds, dogs, jaguars, certain insects, and the hearts and blood of humans. Human sacrifice, especially heart-extraction, was the most preferred and often executed in this district as it was the highest form of honor and payment to the gods.

Tlaloc’s Uelilstli Or Tlaloc’s Power is known for their neverending worship of Tlaloc as they believed fertility, water, success in harvest, and their overall safety laid in his power. Tlaloc, oversaw crop growth, especially maize, and the regular cycle of seasons. These factors were important in the quality and quantity of the crops, preparation, harvesting, trade, and overall foundation of the economy. Due to the fact he played such a massive role in their society, he was worshipped as such. In the worship of Tlaloc, they would present sacrifices, usually children, and tear their hearts from their chest while it is still beating.

In the early construction of Tlaloc’s uelilistli they experienced drought and famine for several years. This led to the starvation of thousands and a drop in the economy. Years later they experienced floods that claimed more lives and caused more devastation. The Aztecs then later established that they were not giving Tlaloc the god of rain earthly fertility and of water enough nourishment and respect which angered the god and caused him to use his power. These events are always a crucial reminder of Tlaloc’s power and importance.
