Are Stereotypes Affecting Kids?

By: Nayeli Canales

What are Stereotypes?

Stereotypes are beliefs that are inaccurate or partially true about certain group of people or thing.

The Main Issue

The importance of knowing the issue.

Knowing the ongoing issue of stereotypes is important because we can try and minimize it since it does affect everyone of all ages.

Why is this important?

Since stereotypes also affect children then parents and teachers can try to help the children understand and recognize stereotypes.

The Main Issue between Stereotypes and Children

The Main Issue of Stereotypes

Stereotypes have typically been known to affect adults but recently there have been studies and articles talking about how children are being affected by it at such a young age. For children stereotypes are typically seen on advertisements, TV shows and movies. According to a Journal written by Jennifer Gladkowski mentions how the average American is exposed to around 4,000 to 10,000 advertisements a day.

The Issue Continued...

Another big issue is that stereotypes affects kids in various ways such as in school. In a journal by Elizabeth Nowicki and Joel Lopata mentions how schools should encourage children and make them understand that school achievement does not rely on gender.

How are kids being affected?

The Effect on the children

  • Stereotypes tend to affect children in their academic classes.
  • Girls have been noticed to have a change in their personalities, imagination and their interest in the world due to the "Disney Princess Effect".
  • Stereotypes can lead to unhealthy problems.

Examples Typically Seen with Stereotypes

Examples of Stereotypes

  • Disney Princesses
  • LEGOS
  • Advertisements seen outside of stores
  • Movies
  • Video Games

In My Opinion...

My Point of View

We should all be informed of the issue and the effects it has on other people. We should be aware of the consequences it has on children and how we can try and minimize these consequences. Teachers and parents should try and go over what stereotypes are and help them understand to identify them.

Can Children Be Raised Free of Stereotypes?

Raising a kid free of stereotypes is not impossible but it is very difficult. The best we can do is help children recognize and understand what stereotypes are and how they can recognize it.

How To Resolve

Teachers can...

  • Teachers can have engaging discussions about stereotypes with their students.
  • After a while of talking about stereotypes teachers can have their students do a project where they apply their understanding of what they learned.

What Can Teachers Do?

Parents can...

  • Talking to kids at a young age about the issue

  • Parents should also be careful with showing bias around others.

What Can Parents Do?

Teaching kids about stereotypes can...

  • Provide self-confidence and motivation
  • Academically successful
  • Great with knowing what they want

Positive Outcomes
