Sainte Jeanne d’Arc was born on January 6, 1412. She was born into the social class of peasant in the village of Domremy.
At a very early age she heard the voices of St. Michael, St. Catherine, and St. Margaret.
Later she began seeing visions of all of these saints and they began to tell her to drive the British out of France.
After this when she turned 16 she petitioned to visit the French royal court and left with the support of two soldiers. Jeanne helped the French dominate the war until she was captured by the Burgundian troops.
When she was captured she was denied access to a legal advisor and was sentenced to death.
Saint François de Sales was a bishop and doctor of the Church, who is now the patron saint of catholic writers.
St. Francois de Sales was born on August 21, 1567 in the kingdom of Savoy near Geneva, Switzerland. He was born into a noble family and he knew from an early age he wanted to serve God but he kept this from his family.
Francois' father wanted him to study law, so in 1580 he attended the university of Paris and studied law, fencing, and writing. Eventually he became a priest and led a reformation to bring 60,000 Calvinists back to the Catholic Church. He died on December 28th 1622 from a stroke.
He was canonized on April 19, 1665 by Pope Alexander VII
St. Vincent de Paul is the patron saint of charities and is known as the "Father of the poor".
St. Vincent de Paul was born into a peasant family in the French village of Pouy on April 24, 1581. He was very smart and got his first education from the Franciscans and he then went on to the University of Toulouse where he studied theology.
He was ordained a priest in 1600 and then captured and sold as a slave in Tunis. Two years later he escaped, and went to Rome to continue his studies. He made hospitals for the poor and made a mission of priests and brothers, called the “Vincentians.” He died at the age of 80 in Paris on September 27th, 1660.
Ste. Marguerite Marie was one of the most iconic French saints ever and was very closely tied to the Sacred Heart.
Ste. Marguerite Marie was born into a poor family in Lhautecour, France on July 22, 1647. Eight years later her father died and Marguerite became very ill and paralyzed. She experienced Christ's presence for the first time one year later.
Marguerite decided to enter into a convent.
She was assigned to an infirmary because she was not very skillful. She began seeing visions of Christ which all related to her form of devotion to Christ. She died on October 17th, 1690.
Saint Jean Marie Vianney is the patron saint of parish schools, he was ordained a priest in 1815 and opened a school for a nearby village.
Saint Jean Marie Vianney was born on May 8, 1786 in Dardilly, France, into a Catholic family, with 5 other kids. His family often went around and helped the poor and went on a pilgrimmage to Rome.
In 1809 Jean Marie was drafted into Napoleon's army. Just two days after his service started, he became very ill and required hospitalization. He was then taken into the mountains where military deserters met. After his time spent there, Jean Marie continued his studies at a seminary and was ordained in 1815. He passed away on August 4th, 1859.
Sainte Catherine Laboure is the patron saint of the elderly. She has a school right here in Harrisburg and she is one of the most iconic saints of France.
Ste. Catherine Laboure was born on May 2nd, 1806. At an early age she entered the Daughters of Charity in Paris. The Virgin Mary appeared to Catherine three times when she was 24 years old. Mary told Catherine to make the Miraculous Medal and to spread devotion to the medal.
After the making of the miraculous medal, Catherine began to care for the elderly and for this, she is called the patroness of seniors. Ste. Catherine died on December 31st, 1876 and her body is incorrupt. She was canonized on July 27th, 1947 by Pope Pius XII and her feast day is on November 28th.
Ste. Bernadette Soubirou is the patron saint of the ill and the poor. She played such an important role in building one of the most amazing Churches in the world and is a very important saint in French history.
St. Bernadette was born in Lourdes, France on January 7, 1844 into a poor family. She was the first of 9 children. She suffered extreme asthma and lived the rest of her life in poor health. On February 11th, 1858, Bernadette was sent to gather camp fire when the Virgin Mary appeared to her. Mary then asked Bernadette to return to the grotto each day for a fortnight even though her parents were embarrassed and tried to stop her.
One day, Mary told her to drink the water of the spring, to wash in it, and eat the herb that grew there and the next day the spring was clean. Many believed her but other people did not as well and thought she was crazy. On the 13th of the apparitions, Bernadette told her that a chapel should be built. Bernadette told the local priest of her vision and they built a chapel and it is now known as the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, one of the biggest sites in the world.
Therese will forever be known by her nickname, "The Little Flower”. She is the patron saint of missionaries and florists.
Therese was born in 1873, born into a very religious family with her mom wanting to be a saint and her dad being a monk.
Therese had 4 other siblings, all being female and their were close all of their lives.
Therese’s mother died at the age of 4 from breast cancer. At 11, she began the habit of mental prayer and grew much closer to God. Therese had an emotional outbreaks all the time and could not control her emotions.
Therese wanted to enter into the Carmelite convent but she did not know if she could handle it with her emotional outbursts.
She was denied by the bishop so Therese went to the pope and begged him until the Vicar General saw her courage and put her in the convent with her sisters.
Therese had her doubts in God but worked hard but eventually she started coughing up blood and worked for a year like that without telling anyone until she got too sick a year later. Therese died at the age of 24 on September 30th, 1897
All of these saints were very significant to France and to the Roman Catholic Church. All of them gave almost their whole life to God and they deserve all the credit they get. Many of them save the mother of God and that is obviously a once in a lifetime opportunity. These people are some of the closest people to God and even though they lived very difficult lives, but now they will spend eternal life with him in heaven. The French should be honored to have such amazing and holy people representing their country. We all should strive to live lives just like these saints
