L&T Sessions

Sessions

All L&T sessions will get you challenging your thinking. You will need to be prepared to think critically and to discuss your ideas. Critical reading and thorough preparation is a pre-requisite of every session. Have a browse of some of the session titles and a flavour of the sorts of questions you will be grappling with

Diversity, difference and Equality

Diversity, difference and Equality

How might a teacher's thinking contribute to the underachievement of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) children as well as those from low income families?

Grouping Children

How does a teacher decide to group the children in his or her class and what are the pros and cons of those decisions?

Grouping Children

Collaboration

How does a teacher turn group work into collaborative work?

Collaboration

Curriculum

Who designs the curriculum and what does it say about what is valued in your classroom?

Resources

When you enrol in September you will have access to Moodle and UCL library services. Everything you need to be successful will be at your fingertips.

Resources

Reading Lists

You will have access to reading lists for each L&T session and for each L&T essay question. You will be signposted to the essential readings for each session. It is imperative that you engage in this reading. Success in this module depends on the depth of yoru reading and thinking so treat the lists as a starting point.

Please read critically. This means that instead of reading from cover to cover and trying to retain everything, read with a focus or a question in mind. Make notes with questions and conflicts that arise and with links between the reading and previous reading and experience.

Reading Lists

Please note that this is an example from this year's reading list for illustration purposes only. These texts may or may not be included for 2020-21.

Core Texts

Core Texts

The two core texts pictured here are necessary for the L&T module and for the Professional Studies component of the Professional Practice Module. We are currently using the 2014 edition but more recent versions would be fine too. You can purchase these texts if you prefer hard copy but please note that these texts are free to access online via the library once you have enrolled so you do not need to purchase the texts.

Assessment

Assessment

As a PGCE student you are in the very strong positon of being research engaged and a teacher in the classroom. Sadly this is rare and it is a major strength.

To highlight your capability to synthesise theory and practice, the L&T module is assessed by a 5000 word assignment written in repsonse to set questions that are based on the themes running through the module.

You will submit an essay plan so we can check on your progress before you submit a full assignment for detailed, formative feedback. You will then have a chance to make amendments before final submission.

You will receive support via Moodle and in the form of a whole cohort tutorial and a group tutorial. Success on the L&T module gives you 30 M level credits for future studies at M level.

Introduction

Welcome to the Teaching and Learning Module. This M level module is embedded within the UCL Connected Curriculum and the Teaching and Learning Research Project (TLRP). This module focuses on: teaching pedagogy, reflective practice and critical analysis - thinking, inquring and asking questions are vital.

Teaching and Learning Research Project (TLRP)

The TLRP was a UK wide research project that spanned 10 years and analysed teaching and learning using 100s of small and large scale research studies. Read more about the project using the PDF below. The principles of effective pedagogy that came from the project underpin the L&T module and can be seen in the poster attached

TLRP Principles

UCL Connected Curriculum

The Connected Curriculum aims to ensure that all UCL students are able to learn through participating in research and enquiry at all levels of their programme of study. As a PGCE student you will be in the unique postion of being research informed when teaching and being able to critique research on the basis of your experience

Pre-Course Task

Working at Masters level means thinking critically. Thinking critically means asking questions, considering sources, thinking about limitations, links and - ultimately - relevance for the children in your class. Reading critically is the same. We do not want you to read a text from first word to last with a view to retaining every detail. Instead, we want you to read with a focus in mind - a dilemma, a question, a concept - and to think about how what your reading changes your thinking. We will provide you with more guidance at the start of the course but in advance of the first day we would like you to engage with two texts critically. Choose two of the texts from the four links on this page and make notes in response to the following questions. We will ask you to discuss your thinking when we first meet for L&T Day 1.

Pre-Course Task

1. What are the strengths and limitations of the source?

2. What questions does it raise for a teacher of primary children?

3. What might you want to read about next in order to develop your thinking?
