October 18 2018

Introduction

The History of the Myth

This myth comes from the beginning of a long book called the Popol Vuh. Popol Vuh translated into English means "council book". The culture that created the Popol Vuh is the Maya.

History of the Myth

The Mayan civilization lived in Guatemala and in the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico from 250 to 900 CE.

Where and When

The End

The Serpents tried unsuccessfully to make humans, so they needed help. They called upon the wise ones, Grandfather Xpiyacoc and Grandmother Xmucane. The Grandparents advised them to make humans out of wood, but even the wood people couldn't remember the makers. Then there was a flood and the wood people were destroyed. The monkeys in the forest today are a sign of the wood people, they look like wood carvings.

The End

The Maize People

The first true humans were finally created by Grandmother Xmucane out of maize (corn) flour and water. Their names were Jaguar Quitte, Jaguar Night, Mahucatah and True Jaguar.

The Maize People

The Middle

Heart of sky and Plumed Serpent separated the mountains from the water and created the sky. The Serpents then created the animals on the earth. They told the animals to pray to them, but all the animals did not talk, instead they devoured each other.

The Beginning

In the beginning, there was nothing. The makers of the sky,Heart of Sky, and of the sea, Plumed Serpent, planned the beginning of life.
