URBAN WATER CYCLE

By Marlie, Simona, Sachi, Sienna & Olivia

Theats

Threats to Reservoirs:

  • Humans fishing and farming in reservoirs
  • Releasing any chemicals or dangerous liquids into reservoirs
  • Leaving rubbish on the ground which can end up in a Reservoir

Reservoir

Positive Action

 Positive Actions to keep Reservoirs Clean:

  • Continue to inforce strict rules on who is allowed near and in reservoirs
  • Encourage communities to pick up rubbish from surrounding areas
  • Make sure to dispose of all chemicals properly

Reservoir

Definition

 Stormwater is pure rain water that falls on top of buildings and houses and then spills onto the Earth’s surface and then into drains which leads to creeks and rivers. Whilst stormwater is travelling, litter and pollution can be in contact with it at any time.

Storm Water

Positive Action

Positive Actions to protect our storm water sytem:

  • Using Porous paving and concreate
  • Installing storm water tanks
  • Installing roof top gardens
  • Using grass instaed of concreate
  • Building Swales around your suburb

Storm Water

Threats

Threats to Melbournes Stormwater sytem:

  • Dirty gasses and liquids bring released into the stormwater system
  • Litter ending up in drains and tanks
  • Polluted water flowing into storm water drains

Storm Water

Definition

Wetlands are a large area of land that is saturated or soaked in water. Wetlands play a big role in cleaning stormwater from litter and pollution. They also help protect against flooding and provides a safe environment for animals such as birds.

Wetlands

Threats

Threats to Melbournes Wetalnds:

  • Dumping of toxic pollutants
  • Human growth
  • Clearing of agriculture
  • Dumping of domestic and industrial waste

Wetlands

Positive Action

Positive Actions to save our Wetalnds:

  • Reduce the amount of rubbish being dumped in out wetlands
  • Decrease the amount of pollution being released into the atmosphere
  • Encourage laws to protect wetlands

Wetlands

Positive Action

Positive actions to improve Melbournes sewage system:

  • Don't flush chemicals down the toilet
  • Dispose of rubish in the bin, not toilet
  • Use water tanks to collect storm water instead of letting it go into the sewers

Sewage

Positive Action

Positive actions to improve our waterways:

  • Dispose of all rubbish properly
  • Provide bins to dispose rubbish in
  • Re-vegertate areas around waterways

Waterways

Threats

Threats to our water ways:

  • Leaving rubbish around waterways
  • Releasing oil into oceans and rivers
  • Clearing of plant surounding waterways
  • Introducing new spieces of animals and plants

Waterways

Definition

Reservoir

A Reservoir is a large dam where portions of water is stored. It can also define as an enlarged natural or artificial lake where you can store liquids, mainly water. Reservoirs can be constructed in river valleys using dams and can be created by controlling a stream that drains an existing amount of water.

Definition

Waterways

A waterway is a river, canal, or other route in which water travels through. They can also be areas that protect rivers, streams and creeks throughout Melbourne. That’s over 8,400 kilometres of waterways – the same distance from Perth to Brisbane and back again.

Threats

Threats to Melbournes Sewage System:

  • Flushing chemicals down toilets
  • Un-wanted rubish
  • Disposle of fat, oil and greese
  • Alowing stormwater to flow into the sewage pipes

Sewage

Definition

Sewage

Sewage is waste water and excrement that is conveyed in sewers, underneath the ground. A Sewerage system is vital to Melbourne’s health; because Melbourne produces 850 million litters a day of waste, and if we didn’t have a sewage system disease would spread a lot quicker.

Threats

Nature

Due to the introduction of humans onto the earth, nature has suffered our affects. Things that contribute to these affects are;

• Littering

• Pollution

• Creating cities that don’t contribute well to nature

• Greenhouse gases

• Climate Change

Positive Action

Nature

Positive action we can take to stop these things are;

• create products that agree with the water cycle

• Pick up forgotten litter

• Plant more trees instead of removing them

• Cut down air con and heater use

• STOP BURNING FOSSIL FUELS, we need to find a more sustainable way to create energy

Definition

Nature is a helping in hand in the Urban Water Cycle by helping the wildlife and plants to be able to stay healthy and alive. Nature helps native animals like platypuses, frogs, birds and more have clean and healthy water.
