The Odyssey

Hero's Journey

Road of Trials

[The encounter with the Cyclops]

Road of Trials

After being overpowered by a Cyclops and ending up trapped in the cave where the cyclops resides, many of Odysseus’ men are brutally eaten by the Cyclops (903). Odysseus comes up with a plan to save him and the rest of the men who came with him. He get’s the Cyclops drunk, and when asked who he is, he tells the Cyclops his name is “Nohbody.” He proceeds to stab the Cyclops in the eye so he cannot see. When asked by the other Cyclopes who had hurt him, he replies “Nohbody’s hurt me. Nohbody’s tricked me” so the others do not come to his aid (907). The next morning, Odysseus and his men escaped on the sheep that the Cyclops had blindly opened the entrance for. However, Odysseus proceeded to taunt the Cyclops, so he put a curse on him and his men as their boat sailed on it’s way.

Cyclops:

Woman as Temptress

[Encounter with Circe]

Woman as Temptress

Odysseus and his men find themselves in Aeaea, where the goddess Circe lives, although she is “considered by many to be a witch” (916). Odysseus and part of his crew stayed on the ship while the others, led by Eurylochus, went on to explore the land. When they encountered Circe at her home, she invited them in for a meal. All fell into her trap, except for Eurylochus. She clouded their minds and made them forget about getting back to Ithaca. She then proceeded to turn all of the men into pigs.Odysseus and his men then ended up staying with Circe for a whole year. She put Odysseus under a trance, and distracted them from their journey

Refusal of the Return

[Staying with Circe for a year]

Refusal of the Return

Circe tries to trick Odysseus, but he had received a plant from the god Hermes that had protected him from her spell. She realizes that he is no ordinary man, that he is Odysseus. Her and her maidens treat him and take care of him and his men. They bathe them, dress them in fresh clothing, feed them. She asked them to stay with her, and although Eurylochus tried to remind them they had a home to get back to, they did not listen. As the text reads, “So day by day we lingered, feasting long on roasts and wine, until a year grew fat,” (924 and 925). Odysseus postponed his journey for a whole year. His men finally summoned him and told him this needed to end, and although he really didn't want to leave, he knew they had to get back on their way.

Road of Trials- continued

[Facing Scylla at Sea]

Road of Trials- continued

While sailing towards home, Odysseus and his men encounter Scylla, a very hostile sea beast with twelve legs and six heads. Six of Odysseus’ men are killed by Scylla. On page 936, the text shows this graphic scene, “Then Scylla made her strike, whisking six of my best men from the ship. I happened to glance aft at ship and oarsmen and caught sight of their arms and legs, dangling high overhead.”

Scylla:

Rescue from Without

[King Alcinous helps Odysseus return home]

Rescue from Without

In the beginning of the story it tells how Odysseus’ ship was struck down and he, being the only survivor, washed up on the land of the Phaeacians. Alcinous, who is king, hosts a banquet for Odysseus and asks him to tell him who he is and where he came from. Odysseus tells him the very long and detailed story of it all. When he is finished with the story, King Alcinous helps him to get back to Ithaca. As shown on page 943, “With the help of KIng Alcinous, Odysseus finally returns home to the shores of Ithaca." Although it does not specify how he helps him get home, we know that he did not get there all on his own.

Crossing of the Return Threshold

[Odysseus gets back to Ithaca]

Crossing of the Return Threshold

Twenty years after setting out on the perilous journey back home, Odysseus finally makes it back to the shores of his homeland, Ithaca. However he is the only one who makes it back. None of his men survived the trip. He soon sees that there are hundreds of suitors on the island ready to compete for his wife Penelope’s hand in marriage. He disguises himself as a beggar and takes on the competition. He made it back to Ithaca, and he is not giving up now.

Supernatural Aid

[Help from Athena during the battle]

Supernatural Aid

Once he wins the test of the bow, he reveals that he is in fact Odysseus. Odysseus says that he must kill all the suitors, and a battle begins in the palace. However Odysseus can’t defeat them all on his own. Athena the goddess offers her powers to aid him in the gruesome fight. On page 960, the text shows, “Six of the suitors attempt on attack on Odysseus, but Athena deflects their arrows.”

The Ultimate Boon

[Odysseus defeats all the suitors and reconnects with Penelope]

The Ultimate Boon

After defeating all of the suitors, Odysseus finally confronts Penelope. Penelope at first did not believe that it was really him, but he showed her he was telling the truth by ranting about how their room has changed. He describes the details in which their bed was built. Penelope knows only the real Odysseus could know these things. Penelope embraces him. Although they didn’t get to spend the best years of their lives together, they knew that they would make the best with what years they had left. He had traveled so far for her, and now they were finally together again. Penelope was his happy ending.
