Early Life
- David Crosthwait was born on May 27th, 1898, in Nashville, Tennesse
- As a young kid, David attended an all black school.
- Even though he was born in Tennessee, he grew up in Kansas City, Kansas
- At a young age Crosthwait set his determination on becoming a engineer.
- David's teachers, friends, and parents encouraged him to create experiments and designs.
- After graduating from high school he was offered a full scholarship to Purdue University for his academic acheivements.
Getting Into Position
- At Purdue University David Crosthwait studied Mechanical Engineering.
- After graduating with a bachelor and masters degree Crosthwait went on to work at C.A. Dunham Company in Marshalltown, Iowa
- In his new company he became the Research Engineer
Greatest Contribution
Overall in David Crosthwait's years, his greatest achievement was creating the heating system in the freezing Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

- Crosthwait also created many innovations to the HVAC (Heating,Ventilation, Air-Conditioning) systems.
- David Crosthwait also became the first African American to be honored as an official member of the Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air-Conditioning Engineers in 1971.
- He won a medal from the National Technological Association in the 1930s.
- He held over 119 patents worldwide for inventions.
- David finally, added chapters to the American Society of Heating and Ventilation Engineers Guide.
- Some of his inventions and innovations consisted of an improvement to a boiler and a new control for thermostat

Although many African Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr. battled racism, David Crosthwait did not as much, if even a little it wasn't a big part of his life. One example is though he attended an all black school as a child.

Since the death of David Crosthwait on February 25th, 1976, Crosthwait has since been remembered for his heating and cooling inventions and innovations.
