What was the 12th labor?

The 12th Labor

  • 12th and final labor was the most challenging.
  • Hercules had to bring Cerberus, the gatekeeper of Hades, up from the underworld.

How Hercules Completed this Task

Hercules's Method

  • Hercules went to a priest named Eumolpus and was initiated into the mysteries which were sacred religious rites known for bringing happiness to those in the underworld.

  • He traveled to a place known as Taenarum, where he ventured into a deep rocky cave that lead him to the underworld.
  • Hercules asked Hades if he could take Cerberus and the god agreed on one condition.
  • Hercules would not be able to use any weapons to take Cerberus.
  • He eventually found him at the gates of Acheron.
  • Hercules wrapped his arms around Cerberus and subdued him.

Finally

  • Hercules brought Cerberus to King Eurystheus and was finally done with his 12 labors.
