The Seven Pillars of Effective Reading Instruction

Adrienne Harris

Teacher Knowledge

Pillar 1

Teacher knowledge is beneficial in the quality of their instruction. Increasing teacher knowledge helps to bridge the gap in student achievement.

Classroom Assessment

Pillar 2

Assessment provide real time student data that is used to help drive instruction. Teachers use assessments to gather information about student's reading abilities so that they are able to plan instruction targeting those skills the child lacks.

Evidence-based Teaching Practices

Pillar 3

Excellent teachers have an abundance of tools and resources in their instructional toolbox. Teacher use evidence-based learning because it has been proven effective in student learning.

Response to Intervention (RTI)

Pillar 4

This system allows students to receive extra support through interventions to help develop their reading skills. All students are screened on a 3 tiered system.

Tier 1- Core Classroom Interventions

Tier 2- Supplementary Interventions

Tier 3- Intensive Intervention

Motivation and Engagement

Pillar 5

Students must be motivated in order for them to be engaged. Students are more motivated to read when the activities are related to their lives and they are given choices.

Technology and New Literacies

Pillar 6

New literacy studies: The skills, strategies and insights necessary to successfully exploit the rapidly changing information and communication technologies that continuously emerge in our world.

Family and Community Connections

Pillar 7

80% of student learning occurs outside of school. Effective teachers create family literacy programs for students to help bridge the learning of literacy skills from school to home.
