According to Hindu mythology, there was a king who was in his last days of life because his astrologer told him that a serpent would come to harm him. To escape this curse, the king was advised to sleep with diyos all around the palace on Laxmi Puja day, so that the goddess can defend him from the serpent. Later on the serpent arrived but Laxmi Puja convinced the serpent not to harm the king. The serpent took the king to Yama Raj where he saw that the king’s days on earth were numbered zero. The clever serpent wrote a seven before the zero and that way the king lived for seventy more years. Since then, Tihar is widely celebrated by worshipping Laxmi and Yama Raj, in other word the festival is a celebration of life and prosperity.
