Project Location and Objectives
RAD-AID has been working in an education role with Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) since 2015. Currently, RAD-AID has continually supported LFHC with volunteers in many separate modalities such as sonography, radiography, education, and IT. A team led by RAD-AID Pediatric Radiology Program Manager, Dr. Michael Reiter, traveled to Laos in May 2015, and performed a Radiology Readiness Assessment at LFHC to identify best-practice solutions and strategies for radiology service implementation. RAD-AID has provided ongoing training and educational resources to local personnel and LFHC staff on radiology services, including lectures, demonstrations, and clinical case discussions, on topics such as diagnostic methods, radiologic interpretation, quality control, patient safety, clinical workflow management, and referral system communications. Most recently from the reports from past volunteers, sonography is still an area needing improvement and further education for the technologists at LFHC. The technologist/sonographer roles have expanded to include neonatal patients, the addition of color Doppler, and describing ultrasound findings. With leadership from the RAD-AID Laos Program Manager Mike Reiter, RAD-AID can continue to provide educational support for LFHC technologists/ sonographers.
This project will continue to require volunteers in all of the current modality areas. Computed Tomography is being implemented at the Provisional Hospital that will partner training with RAD-AID and LFHC. Successes of this program include the education of the medical imaging profession in the Department of Radiology at LFHC. By assessment of ASRT Technologist Fellows and physicians on-site, he has been educated to the point of competence by the technologists from the RAD-AID ASRT Foundation partnership. He is now at the point of training additional medical imaging colleagues within the Department of Radiology at LFHC. This program is an example of a successful train the trainer model. RAD-AID International received the Friends of Asia Award from Friends without a Border for this successful work in Laos—which would not have been possible without ASRT Foundation technologists.
Project Objectives
Continued clinical training, reinforce skills in sonography, and protocols. During this work-trip, the selected sonographer will provide ultrasound training, including hands-on training, and speaker availability in such topics as pediatric ultrasound, renal ultrasound, thyroid ultrasound, and/or abdominal Doppler. The major modalities in Laos are radiography and sonography.
The program is expanding to include additional educated members within the Dep
