Mental Health in Young Adults

Problem

In modern, American society there is an increase in numbers of mental health issues in young adults.

Why?

A generation of young adults who have grown up using social media are the ones who are suffering. The world is starting to see the long term effects of social media addiction.

Why?

Check in on Your Friends

Mental health issues are not always visible. While there are some signs to tell someone is hurting, most times it is not that obvious.

Check In

Setting Personal Limits

Set Limits

Setting personal goals is helpful in every part of someone's life. Social media is a great example of this. Setting limits of how often you go on social media or setting limits on how much screen time you use will give you direct results in your state of mind.

Causes

A mixture of being addicted to your cell phone and constantly trying to impress others is what causes mental disorders.

Social Media

Social media the largest it has ever been. One of the first testings of the effects of social media on the mind was in 2011. Scientists came up with the term "Facebook Depression." This is exactly what young adults are suffering from, but they not only use Facebook. There are so many social media outlets that could have the same effect, such as Instagram and Twitter.

Social Media

An Addiction

Cell Phones

The video outlines how young adults have grown up with constant use of cell phones. From an early age the cell phone has been irreplaceable in a person's life. This has decreased the amount of physical exercise people do everyday which increases the likelihood for depression. It also takes away the importance of being present in the moment. Which can pull us apart as humans.

Effects

The age group that is most affected by mental illness in the adult world is young adults. These are people from the age of 18 to mid 20's.

Anxiety

Anxiety is very common among young adults. Whether it is a slight anxiety or a serious anxiety that is always in someone's mind, it could be caused from social media. Focusing too much on social image can cause a social anxiety where someone is always so worried about what everyone else thinks of them that they have a constant uneasiness about them.

Anxiety

Depression in Young Adults

Depression

There are many causes for depression in young adults, and one of those can be social media and cell phone addiction. Becoming an adult is already an unsure time in someone's life. Adding social image and addiction into this can create major lows for some young adults.

Counterclaim

A common counter argument to the claim that social media is not good for mental health is that social media helps people come together and be more social. While for some people this may be true, but with an overuse of it, social media can be detrimental.

Awareness

Awareness

Even if you do not think that this cause is worth the time and effort to stop, as a young adult you can understand that most people your age have grown up using social media. It is important to be aware that these events have detrimental effects on the mental state.

Use in Moderation

Social media can be a helpful way to connect friends and family, but only when used in moderation. Using social media too much makes the mind go to deep, dark places in order to keep up and impress others online. It is important to unplug every once in awhile.

Use in Moderation

A Simple Solution

Solution

Some may say that social media helps mental health and makes people closer together, but as seen in the video and in the chart, social media and cell phone addiction make people further apart on the mental level. Social media is a cause for anxiety and depression which can lead to worse effects. Being aware of others and respecting your own mental health can fix this problem. Cutting yourself off from social media and unplugging from your cell phone for periods of time can clear your mind and make you feel happier.
