American Revolutionary War Timeline

Ash Howard

Treaty of Paris

Febuary 10, 1763

The first Treaty of Paris was between the French and British after many years of battle over the territories the French owned. The treaty gave the British all the French's land in North America.

Treaty of Paris

This event shaped American independence because it is what caused the British to impose taxes on the colonies. I chose this event because the first Treaty of Paris is what started the colonist to start to branch off from Britain. The colonist were upset because while the British may have won the war for them, they could not move onto the land and now had to pay taxes for the war.

Declaratory act

March 18, 1766

The declaratory act was an act from parliament that said that they had the right to tax the colonies and govern the colonies how they choose. The Declaratory Act scared many colonists as they viewed it as a threat to the governments they had made themselves.

Declaritory Act

The Declaratory Act shaped American Independence by infuriating and scaring the colonist, making some rebel from British rule. I chose this because if the colonist were not scared and angry at the British, they would not have rebelled for independence. People do not fight unless they believe they have a good reason to.

Boston Massacre

March 5, 1770

A Patriot mob threw snowballs and rocks at the Redcoats as a violent protest. Seven colonist were killed after British troops shot to defend themselves from the attacks.

Boston Massacre

This event shaped American independence by making the Patriots write biased papers that made more colonist upset at the British, and divided the colonist more because there were two versions of the event. I chose this event because many people would not have become Patriots if it were not for the Boston Massacre.

Boston Tea Party

December 16, 1773

The colonist dumped 342 chests of tea from the East India Company to protest the monopoly the company had on tea in the colonies and the taxes imposed on tea on in the colonies. The British retaliated by stopping shipments to Massachusetts.

Boston Tea Party

The Boston Tea Party shaped American independence by making it to where the colonies had to unite more because the British refused to send goods to Massachusetts until the damaged goods were paid for. This meant that the colonies had to unite to help them and scared the other colonies as the British could do it to them to. I chose this event because it is an important factor in the American Revolution.

Battle of Lexington and Concord

April 19, 1775

Battle of Lexington and Concord

The battle of Lexington and Concord caused the “shot heard around the world” as it started the real revolution. The Patriots won the fight which showed the British that the Patriots were serious about the fight.

This shaped American Independence by showing the Patriots and the British that the fight was not over and that the Patriots were willing to risk their lives for independence. The fight also showed the British that the colonist could fight and were ready to do so. I chose this event because it was one of the first wins for the Continental Army.

Battle of Bunker Hill

June 17, 1775

Battle of Bunker Hill

Only months after the Battle of Lexington and Concord the Patriots attacked the British again, while this was technically a loss for the Patriots they managed to make the outcome worse for the British making it more of a victory for the Patriots than the British. This shaped American independence by making the Patriots feel hopeful of future outcomes.

This shaped American independence by making the Patriots feel hopeful of future outcomes. The Battle of Bunker Hill raised the colonists hopes, as while they did not win the battle they did damage the British Army and lost fewer lives. I chose this battle because it raised the spirit of the Continental Congress.

The Battle of Saratoga

September 19, 1777-October 17, 1777

The Continental Army attacked the British troops and held them, draining resources and won with only half the casualties of the British after the British troops finally surrendered. This victory convinced Spain and France to help the Patriots.

Battle of Saratoga

This victory shaped American independence by showing that the Continental Army was able to fight and showed France and Spain that the Americans had a winning chance. I chose the Battle of Saratoga because it was a turning point in the Revolutionary War. If the Continental Army would not have won this battle, the British may have won the war.

Declaration of Independence

July 4, 1776

The Declaration of Independence was approved by twelve of the thirteen colonies by the Continental Congress. The signers knew that if they failed at gaining independence from Britain that they would be killed for treason.

Declaration of Independance

This shaped American independence by showing how serious and upset the colonist were at the British. I chose the Declaration of Independence because the Patriots who signed knew that they could be charged with treason if the British won the war, but they still signed it. The war was almost over, and they wanted to taunt the king.

The Battle of Yorktown

September 28, 1781-October 19, 1781

After the British claimed Yorktown the Continental Army made a plan to block Cornwallis and his troops from leaving Yorktown, the plan was a success and with no way for Cornwallis to get help from other British forces he had to surrender due to being low on supplies and lives.

Battle of Yorktown

This shaped American independence by making it to where the Patriots were almost guaranteed to win the war. I chose this event because it was the turning point for the revolution. Without this battle the war may have lasted much longer.

2nd Treaty of Paris

September 3, 1783

Second Treaty of Paris

Representatives from the colonies and King George the Third of Great Britain signed, making it to where the king would have to acknowledge the independence the United States and have his troops leave the United States. This ended the war and made the colonies independent.

I chose this event because it was the end of the fight for independence. The Treaty of Paris meant that the colonies were finally free from Britain. This was important because it meant that the colonies were free and could form their own government to ruin the colonies themselves.
