Edu 524: Coping with Stress & Violence

September 14, 2020

Dr. Catherine Webb

Character Counts is based on six core values that define good character. These values, called The Six Pillars of Character, are: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. This program focuses on three of those traits...

On the ROAD to success

Respect means to honor and to show consideration and value to people, property, the environment, and yourself. It means to treat

others well even if they look, act, or believe differently than you do.

Intro

Responsibility is being accountable for one's actions and to know and follow various rules, laws, and conduct codes. Responsible citizens treat others fairly, are trustworthy, honor their commitments, and are environmentally aware.

Caring is feeling and showing concern for others by being kind and helpful and not expecting anything in return.

What is Respect?

Respect

Respect is showing high regard for other people, for authority, for property, and understanding that all people are valued.

Teaching Respect

in Schools

The respect you give others is a dramatic reflection of the respect you give yourself.

Robin Sharma

Teaching Respect in Schools

Respect is a value that needs to be practiced by schools. Respect should be embedded into the curriculum and practiced in daily interactions.

Respect can be taught and reflected upon during "teachable moments." The following topics should be taught:

1. What is respect?

2. How does it look?

3. How does respect sound?

4. How shall I show respect?

Care in the Classroom

Caring

In order for students to be successful, they must feel that they are genuinely being valued and cared for in the classroom. Educators must provide a safe space where care can be fostered between students and their peers, and between their teachers as well. Showing compassion for students is a crucial component to teaching. Care can be expressed to students in many ways from practicing mindfulness, to incorporating culturally relevant curriculum. It is one thing to say we care about our students, and another thing to show them that we care. Students ultimately wish to be seen, heard, valued, and empowered. Mcwhirter (2017) affirms that there are positive results when students are in an environment where they are treated as unique individuals who have unique contributions to make to the group.

A caring relationship between adults and students help meet the needs of at-risk students and influences student's perceptions of climate and community in the classroom (Mcwhirter 2017, p. 97)

Cultivating Care

One way to show our students that we care is by providing them with a meaningful educational experience. Teaching them to be bucket fillers allows them to practice kindness. A bucket filling school is a school that is consciously aware that every student has a visible bucket. They make the effort to fill it with kind actions and deeds. If anyone should be a bucket dipper, they are to put the lid on their bucket. It is a way of uplifting students and reminding them that they are valued .

Creating Responsible Students

"Young people must develop responsible habits that enable them to self-direct their behavior" (McWhirter et al. (2017, p. 57).

In order to create responsible students, teachers must create opportunities for students to practice choosing behaviors & actions that will be in their own best interests and take into consideration other people they may affect (Elias, 2008).
