Bias

Inclination or prejudice for or against one person or group, especially in a way considered to be unfair.

Why do we have biases?

The unconscious mind is able to process 11 million pieces of information per second, while the conscious mind can manage a mere 40 ref-https://www.britannica.com/science/information-theory/Physiology

“Those who are most unaware of their biases are the ones most influenced by them”

And by being unaware of our bias's, we are more likely to allow them to affect our behaviours.

Tools for reducing the effects of bias

  • Deliberately slow down decision making (You can make the unconscious, conscious if you give yourself a moment).

  • Reconsider reasons for decision. (Question first impressions)

  • Question cultural stereotypes. (Is it justified?)

  • Monitor each other for unconscious bias. (Ask for feedback and empower everyone to call out bias, just culture!)

Test your own biases - Implicit association test
