The history of country music

The origins of country music can be found in recordings Southern Appalachian fiddle players made in the late 1910s.

Vernon Dalhart had the first national country hit in 1924 with "Wreck of the Old'97". But most historians point to 1927, the year Victor Records signed Jimmie Rodgers and The Carter family, as the true moment country music was born.

The Carter family was country music's first famous vocal group. Two of their earliest hits "Keep on the Sunny Side" and "Wildwood Flower" remain country standards to this day.

Folk music

American folk music has no precise nameable origin because it organically grew out of a communal tradition more than for entertainment or profit. There are folk songs that date so far back they can be considered oral histories.

From its origins, folk music has been the music of the working class. It is community-focused and has rarely enjoyed commercial success. Folk songs range in subject matter from war, work, civil rights and economic hardship to nonsense, satire and, of course, love songs.
