William Golding (1911-1993) was born in Cornwall (his father was a teacher (socialist) his mother was a suffragette)
He became an English teacher.
During the war, he obtained command of a ship and in this role he was highlighted in various war operations (e.g. Normandy landing).
In 1945 he left the navy and returned to teaching, in 1962 he left teaching to devote himself to writing
In 1982 he was awarded an honorary degree at the Sorbonne University
In 1983 he won the Nobel Prize for literature, "for his ability to effectively describe the human condition in the contemporary world, thanks to realistic narrative clarity and the universality of the myth"

In 1952 wrote the novel "Strangers from Within", which was not accepted by publishers
In 1954 it was published by T.S. Eliot with the title "Lord of the flies" suggested by Eliot, the title was inspired by a Beelzebub metaphor
The book rejoined the experiment carried out by Golding in his elementary school, where he divided the children into two groups to discuss on a specific argument, sometimes with him, sometimes independently.
Golding noted that, in the absence of an arbitrator, the discussion often escalated into a fight.
The novel is a manifesto of his pessimistic society view, according to which the instinct to oppression prevails over reason ... in harmony with the theory of "homo homini lupus" or with the philosophy of Thomas Hobbes
