Juxtaposition. “I had expected that Mr. Gatsby would be a florid and corpulent person person in his middle years.” (Great Gatsby, page 53).

THE GREAT GATSBY

JAY GATSBY

Eyes

Irony, “Yeah.’ He flipped his sleeves up under his coat. ‘Yeah, Gatsby’s very careful about women. He would never so much as look at a friend’s wife.” (Great Gatsby, page 78).

The Green light, the most significantly cliché but for good reason visual symbol, it showed the reader that Gatsby had hope, a hope of receiving Daisy’s love one day and that although he knew it may not happen he would cling on to that hope.

Gatsby's eyes are that of determination to get what he wants, which is Daisy.

His eyes are drawn to what he cannot have easily.

Direct comparison, “Turning a corner I saw that it was Gatsby’s house, lit from tower to cellar.” (Great Gatsby, page 87).

"Gatsby, pale as death... glaring tragically into my eyes." (The Great Gatsby, Page 87).

This quote emphasises the fact that even though he knows what he desperatly wants, he knows he cannot have it in the end and that the future is uncertain.

Archetype, “Klipspringer plays the piano,’ said Gatsby, cutting him off. ‘Don’t you,Ewing, old sport?” (Great Gatsby, page 101).

This shows the commitment that Gatsby had for Daisy and how there was nothing that he would not do for her. It showed readers his joyous side, a more natural personality that Gatsby rarely showed anyone.

5 important quotes.

Daisy is the driving force behind Gatsby’s actions in many ways as well as his rash decisions. Without her he would go insane and lose all motivation. This is why the visual symbol for Daisy is put upon his shoulders to show the weight that she bears on his body.

1. “Sometimes they came and went without having met Gatsby at all, came for the party with a simplicity of heart that was its own ticket of admission.”

The reason why his house is so significant is due to the fact that his house may as well represent his own body. There are times within the book where his house would seem dormant and cold, but only when Gatsby wishes to impress Daisy with luxurious parties does the mansion seem lively.

In this first quote not only does it show the carefree nature of Gatsby when there is nothing for him to gain but generosity for benefit. When mentioning generosity for benefit this implies that Gatsby only does things, such as throwing public parties, in order to heighten up his imagine for one reason or another, and this reason might as well be the one he loves most dear, Daisy. He throws massive parties only to try to impress Daisy of the luxuriously happy life they can have together.

4. "Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay.” (Great Gatsby, page 85).

2. “Only Gatsby, the man who gives his name to this book, was exempt from my reaction—Gatsby who represented everything for which I have an unaffected scorn.” (Great Gatsby, page 4).

The car represents the great lengths that Gatsby will try to win over Daisy's heart, even unintentionally killing someon to win the race that he thinks will help his chances with her.

This quote represents the persistence and determination to get closer to his goal no matter what. Just the fact that he had bought a house across the lake from Daisy’s should show the characters spirit to try at all costs.

Here in this part of the novel Nick Carraway compares Gatsby to other wealthy rich families that have not worked a single day in their lives, only spending as they please while Gatsby did work and had to make a name for himself.

5. “There was nothing to look at from under the tree except Gatsby’s enormous house.” (Great Gatsby, page 94).

The Great Gatsby

3. “But no one swooned backward on Gatsby and no French bob touched Gatsby’s shoulder and no singing quartets were formed with Gatsby’s head for one link.” (Great Gatsby, page 55).

The character in which Gatsby is being exposed of right now it the character of making up for what he lacks. Extravagant parties, large mansions, expensive cars, and even his own organ player can not make up for what he lacks but can diminish its importance to a certain extent.

Anthony Lee

Period 5

F. Scott Fitzgerald

The quote describes how although couples are flirting and fraternizing Gatsby stays uninterested and not attracted to the mere small talk going about. This shows the loyalty and thought process in which Gatsby occupies himself.
