Quality Improvement Initiative: The Administration of Early Nutrition Following PEG Tube Placement in Children

Background

Providers routinely delay the introduction of enteral nutrition following the placement of a PEG tube. This postponement of enteral feedings can lead to:

  • Prolonged hospital stay
  • Increased healthcare costs
  • Deprivation of nutrition
  • Disruption of family life

Quality Improvement Initiative: The Administration of Early Nutrition Following PEG Tube Placement in Children

Objectives

Develop guidelines outlining the initiation of nutrition four hours after PEG tube placement. Guidelines included:

  • Electronic ordering
  • Standard calculations for the initial feeds using the PEG tube
  • Administration instructions for nursing staff

Quality Improvement Initiative: The Administration of Early Nutrition Following PEG Tube Placement in Children

Materials and Methods

  • Standard calculations were adapted from the nutrition department's reference manual
  • Standardized diet order was developed and included in the post-procedure electronic order set

Results

  • Feedback received from each department

Discussion

  • Guidelines enhanced the quality of care received following the child's procedure
