1950
- During the 50’s in Australia the main feature for every meal was meat whether being roasted or cooked on the barbeque. It was generally served with roasted vegetables.
1960
- First Coles and Woolworths Supermarkets in Australia.
The first Woolworths supermarket was opened at Warrawong in New South Wales in May 1960.
- The first Coles store opened in 1960 being the nation's first freestanding supermarket. It was located in the Melbourne suburb of North Balwyn. By 1973 that Coles was located in every capital city of Australia.
1970
First McDonald’s Drive-Thru
- In 1978, Australia’s first McDonald’s Drive-Thru opened in Warrawong, New South Wales.
- Food during this time became a lot more easily accessible for a lot of the Australian population.
1980
Microwave Ready Meals
Following the introduction of the microwave craze, frozen ‘ready meals’ such as the Swanson turkey dinner on the left. This instant meals typically packaged in aluminium based trays contained portions of pre-cooked popular meals like sausages and mashed potatoes, chicken and vegetables, as well as macaroni cheese.
1990
The Food Guide Pyramid
- The Food Guide Pyramid, was released in 1992. The original Food Guide Pyramid, was a widely recognized nutrition education tool .
- A new ideal had begun to emerge in the 1980’s throughout Australia and the world and continuing into the 90’s focussing on health, paving the way for the first nutrition pyramid and the many others to follow.
The Paleo Diet
- The idea of eating meat, fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds and excluding all grains, dairy, salt and added sugar.
