Meaning

Based on the First Amendment, the Library Bill of Rights guides librarians in serving their communities and protecting the rights of all patrons from the looming censorship and privacy threats.

Why is it important?

Why is it Important?

The Library Bill of Rights was designed to speak out against the “growing intolerance, suppression of free speech and censorship affecting the rights of minorities and individuals.”

"All people, regardless of origin, age, background, or views, possess a right to privacy and confidentiality in their library use. Libraries should advocate for, educate about, and protect people’s privacy, safeguarding all library use data, including personally identifiable information." - ALA Library Bill of Rights

Article 7 of the Bill of Rights

All library users should expect privacy and confidentiality in their use of the library. This includes their presence in the building, the materials which they access and view, questions they ask of library staff, and any other activity relating to library use.
