The Radura
The Radura
- Irradiation is a physical treatment where food is exposed to a defined dose of ionising radiation.
- It is used on more than 60 food types in over 40 countries worldwide.
- It is designed to control insect infestation, pathogenic or spoilage microorganisms and delay or eliminate natural biological processes such as ripening, germination or sprouting in fresh food.

- Nationally and internationally recognised
- “Gluten-free” now specifically means the gluten concentration in the final food is up to 20mg of gluten per kg of food.
- “Very low gluten” now specifically means the gluten concentration in the final food is between 21mg and 100mg of gluten per kg of food.
- January 2005, a visual marker was created to signal products that contain dietarily-significant amounts of whole grains.

“low in fat” – a claim that a food is low in fat may only be made where the product contains no more than 3g of fat per 100g for solids or 1.5g of fat per 100ml for liquids.

- Halal is Arabic for permissible. Halal food is that which adheres to Islamic law, as defined in the Koran.
- The Islamic form of slaughtering animals or poultry, dhabiha, involves killing through a cut to the jugular vein, carotid artery and windpipe.
- Animals must be alive and healthy at the time of slaughter and all blood is drained from the carcass. During the process, a Muslim will recite a dedication, know as tasmiya or shahada.
- There is debate about elements of halal, such as whether stunning is allowed.
