The Evolution of Canadian Democracy Timeline

THE LAW CODE OF HAMMURABI

  • The law code of Hammurabi is one of the oldest deciphered writings in the world written (1754 BC) and features a code of law from ancient in Babylon Mesopotamia.
  • The code includes 282 laws with punishments to the slaves, free men, and property owners.
  • There were three social classes (the elite, free men, slaves).
  • Women had limited rights.
  • Almost half of the code focused on contracts and household relationships.

AUGUST 24 MAGNA CARTA

  • Magna Carta is a group of rights agreed by King John of England at Runnymede.
  • King John had no choice but to give up the power.

Some of the Limitations Were:

  • He must use his power fairly.
  • Cannot take money from the poor.
  • Cannot force people to do things randomly.
  • Must respect certain rights of his subjects.

  • After the Magna Carta "PARLIMENT" was invented when people come together to talk about important issues.
  • Parliment was split into two houses: the HOUSE of LORDS-(nobles), and HOUSE of COMMONS- common people.

FRENCH REVOLUTION

  • The French Revolution was a watershed event in modern European history that began in 1789 and ended in the late 1790s with the ascent of Napoleon Bonaparte. During this period, French citizens razed and redesigned their country’s political landscape, uprooting centuries-old institutions such as absolute monarchy and the feudal system.
  • The french revolution is complex and is still debating among historians.

Six Nations make up the famous Confederacy, located in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. Formed around 1570, the Confederacy, or Iroquois League, originally comprised five Tribes, from east to west: the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca. In the early 1700s a sixth Tribe, the Tuscarora, migrated from North Carolina to the border regions between New York and Pennsylvania and united with the original five Tribes in 1722.

WARTIME ELECTIONS ACT.

  • The Wartime Elections Act of 1917 gave the vote to female relatives of Canadian soldiers serving overseas in the First World War.
  • Robert Borden's Conservative government had introduced conscription in May 1917, to bolster Canadian fighting forces in the First World War. Conscription deeply divided the country — English-speaking Canadians were largely in favor, while French-speaking Canadians and others not of British descent were opposed.

  • Beginning of the Roman Empire was in 509 BC and the ending of it was in 27 BC.
  • Roman Empire was a diverse empire which included Latin, Etruscan, and Greek people.
  • In the early years of republic the population was divided, some wanted a monarchy, some wanted republic, some favored the king of Clausius.
  • Between years 133 BC and 27 BC Rome suffered from great internal tensions leading to a numerous civil wars.

  • The Glorious Revolution was when William of orange took the English throne from James II in 1688.

  • Tension between king and parliament ran deep throughout the seventeenth century. In the 1640s, the dispute turned into civil war. The loser, Charles I, was beheaded in 1649; his sons, Charles and James, fled to France; and the victorious Oliver Cromwell ruled England in the 1650s. Cromwell’s death in 1659 created a political vacuum, so Parliament invited Charles I’s sons back from exile, and the English monarchy was restored with the coronation of Charles II in 1660.

  • The laws of Justinian is the part of Corpus Julis Civilis the codification of Roman Law ordered in early 527.
  • Long before the Roman Republic was established in 509 BC the early Romans lived the laws developed through centuries of custom.
  • Justinian achieved this in a short period of time which is like 5 years.

THE CANADIAN CHARTER OF RIGHTS

  • The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms sets out those rights and freedoms that Canadians believe are necessary in a free and democratic society.
  • The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects a number of rights and freedoms, including freedom of expression and the right to equality. It forms part of our Constitution – the highest law in all of Canada – and is one of our country’s greatest accomplishments.

CANADIAN CONFIGURATION

  • Canadian Confederation happened at 1867 and Canada was founded.
  • Upon confederation, the old province of Canada was divided into Ontario and Quebec; along with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the new federation thus comprised four provinces. Over the years since Confederation, Canada has seen numerous territorial changes and expansions, resulting in the current union of ten provinces and three territories.

  • The American Revolution was a colonial revolt that took place between 1765 and 1783. The American Patriots in the Thirteen Colonies won independence from Great Britain, becoming the United States of America. They defeated the British in the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783) in alliance with France and others.
